dana says the plan was to have urijah faber and edgar as coaches, but they couldnt agree on whether it should be 135 or 145, and dana didnt want to do a catchweight.

BJ Penn And Frankie Edgar Set to Coach The Ultimate Fighter Season 19
[/COLOR] As confirmed by UFC Tonight, former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion, B.J. Penn will return to action to coach the 19th season of The Ultimate Fighter against Frankie Edgar. They will be coaching fighters in both the middleweight and light-heavyweight divisions. UFC president, Dana White stated on UFC tonight that he had originally planned on pitting Urijah Faber against Edgar as coaches of TUF but the two could not agree on a weight class in which to compete. Around the same time as the UFC struggled with finding two suitable coaches, Penn requested, in a text to White, Penn expressed his desire for a top caliber lightweight opponent. White also stated that Penn is extremely motivated for this opportunity in a new division. Here is White talking about Penn’s return in a recent press release:
“BJ Penn is moving down to 145 lbs. to coach The Ultimate Fighter against Frankie Edgar,” said UFC President Dana White. “BJ really hates the fact that he lost to Frankie Edgar. It’s something that’s been burning deep inside of him for three years now. So he’s moving down to 145 lbs. to not only avenge those defeats, but to try and become the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in three different weight classes.”
Penn has now agreed to drop to featherweight for the first time in his career and take on Edgar for a third meeting. This will be the first time they have faced each other without a UFC title being on the line. As for the fight, an undetermined date and venue will house the third matchup once the season wraps up. The season debuts in April of 2014 on Fox Sports 1. Penn will fight in the fifth weight class of his professional career, this being the lightest. Penn was unsuccessful in winning his last bout, a welterweight fight with Rory MacDonald last December that went to the judges scorecards. Edgar has already made the drop to 145-pounds, losing his debut bout to featherweight champion, Jose Aldo. Edgar bounced back though, winning a memorable fight with Charles Oliveira at UFC 162. Edgar defeated Penn at UFC 112 in 2010 to take the UFC lightweight title from ‘The Prodigy’ and retained his belt in the rematch at UFC 118.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Motivated Penn is back!!! Not only "motivated" though, but "EXTREMELY MOTIVATED"!!!

bj apparently asked to fight ben henderson before they set this up. these are dana's quotes
“We were putting together The Ultimate Fighter coaches for this season and it was going to be Urijah Faber and Frankie Edgar. Urijah Faber is at 135-pounds. Edgar is at 145. Edgar didn’t want to go to 135 and Urijah Faber wasn’t crazy about going to 145. They were talking about a catchweight fight. I don’t like catchweight fights,” explained UFC president Dana White.
“This thing was all in limbo and then all of a sudden I get a text from B.J. Penn. B.J. Penn texted me and says, ‘Hey Dana, I want to fight Ben Henderson.’ My question to B.J. is why? You’ve accomplished so much. You’ve won the title two times in two different weight classes.
“He said the reason why is ‘I think if I beat Ben Henderson you’ll give me that fight that I want, which is Frankie Edgar,’” added White.
“He says, ‘Frankie Edgar, I can beat Frankie Edgar. Those two first fights were B.S. I want that fight again. I want to beat this guy so bad. It’s all I want.’ You know how B.J. is,” said White. “I started thinking. I’m like, that fight is at 145 B.J. He’s a 145-pounder. He goes, ‘I want to move to 145, beat Frankie Edgar, and fight for that title.’
“He wants this thing worse than anything. He believes he can beat Frankie Edgar. He wants to fight at 145-pounds. It’s tough to say no to B.J,” added the UFC president.

I don't get Penn fight choices taking fights at 170 and getting smashed by Diaz and MacDonald, now moving down to 145 to fight Edgar for the 3rd time. I'd way rather see him fight guys a 155 like Melendez, Cerrone, even a guy like Guillard.

he can definitely win the fight, but its hard to cap for several reasons. is he really motivated? i'm always wary of guys who have "retired" and then come back claiming to be motivated again. how will the layoff affect him? how will the weight cut to 145 affect him? will his cardio improve?
notwithstanding these factors, how do you not get excited about bj's return?? one thing we can be certain about is he will fight to the death.

BJ didn't perform against Rory Mac because he was too focused on revenging Edgar.
