Breaking Bread: UFC for the Troops
    UFC Fight for the Troops
Spike TV and the UFC are treating their fans to a free event on Wednesday, which is a good thing because these pay-per-views have been breaking Bread like a church communion. The card is hardly fantastic. Tonight and Saturday evening’s events are mere teasers leading into UFC 92 in a couple weeks, which is loaded from top to bottom. This is not to say that there aren’t any intriguing matchups here…there are. As always, the potential to win some money exists, and if you pay attention, you just might learn a thing or two.

The cause is a noble one: UFC Fight for the Troops. There will be opportunities for viewers to phone in donations that will go towards building an advanced facility dedicated to research, diagnosis and treatment of military personnel and veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury. UFC announcer Mike Goldberg suffers from something similar from years of sitting next Joe Rogan’s screaming commentary. Won’t you give to Mike Goldberg?

    Calm down Joe Rogan

    Josh Koscheck -250
    Yoshiyuki Yoshida +200

There has been a storm brewing for several weeks now in the UFC pertaining to merchandising and licensing. One of the main issues seems to be the fighters’ likeness being used in video games. This all came to a head as fan favorite Jon Fitch was actually released from the UFC for a day until some kind of agreement was met. Now Koscheck (13-3-0) is unhappy with the deal, and it is rumored that win or lose, this could be his last UFC fight.

I have never been a fan of Kos, and I would love nothing more than to see him bounced out of the UFC with a brutal beatdown. My hopes rest on Japanese fighter Yoshiyuki Yoshida (10-2-0). In his first UFC venture back in May, Yoshida put Jon Koppenhaver to sleep with an anaconda choke…literally. When the ref pulled him off, Koppenhaver had Z’s floating above his head.

But it’s not my birthday and my wish will not be coming true. As much as I can’t stand him, Koscheck is a talented fighter. He has been working on his striking to compliment his superb wrestling skills. I may as well make some money in my disappointment. Koscheck is the play here, as he will be wanting to make a statement to Dana White should he actually leave the organization. Until a Japanese fighter does something to impress me in the UFC, I’m going to keep betting (and cashing) against them. Sorry Charlie.

    Mike Swick -370
    Jonathan Goulet +300

Swick (12-2-0) gets the nod here. Although he never seems to do anything spectacular to stand out, he does win fights. He will look for his third consecutive victory when he fights Goulet (22-9-1). The fight could be uneventful, as Swick has gone to the judges’ cards in his last four matches. What this fight might lack in excitement, it will make up for in comedy.

Goulet calls himself “The Road Warrior”. He does resemble one of the apocalyptic criminals in ‘Mad Max’, but he is hardly scary. I think it might actually be Steve-O with multi-dyed hair. When asked about fighting Swick, Goulet said “I think we are similar fighters - he is aggressive and he likes to bang.” OK then.

    Yet another separated at birth

    Steve Cantwell -310
    Razak Al-Hassan +250

I don’t know much about Cantwell (6-1-0), but it looks like he dominated his last three fights in the WEC. That is not important. What is important is his opponent, Razak Al-Hassan (?-?-?).

There are a few interesting things about Al-Hassan, besides the fact that he is a dead ringer for a one of the old Nintendo ‘Mike Tyson’s Punch Out’ video game characters. First of all, who the heck is he?? He has no MMA record. Upon doing a little research, I have learned that he currently works full time at Wells Fargo. This got me to thinking, what could possibly help this event to get more donations pledged? How about having an All-American looking kid pound some random guy with a Muslim name for a few rounds? That’ll do it!

I’m convinced that this was the plan. And Cantwell has to win. This is for the troops for crying out loud! Dana White is a genius sometimes.

Hey kid, wanna take one for the troops?

    Ben Saunders -355
    Brandon Wolff +285

You know it’s not the greatest card when you find yourself picking all huge favorites. Sometimes that’s the way these freebies go. The only other fight I like is buried on the undercard, where Saunders (6-0-2) takes on Wolff, who also has no MMA record.

Saunders will have a six inch height advantage on his opponent, but it’s not his reach you have to watch out for. When asked what his favorite technique is, Saunders says “I like to kick people in the head.” It’s fun to watch. Looks a bit like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s fighting scenes in ‘Game of Death’. Between his kicks and permanent goofy smile, Saunders puts on entertaining fights. I hope this one manages to get aired.

    Ben likes to kick people

With such short notice I won't make my own thread with write ups but instead I will just add onto the Pulitzer worthy literary work of Bread.

Josh Koscheck -250 vs Yoshiyuki Yoshida +200
Bread, there is one thing you are forgetting about our blonde-pubic-hair-headed friend. Koscheck cannot match the Ninja skill of Yoshida. Yoshi is going Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon all over Koscheck's face. Even if Koscheck has his hand raised at the end of the fight, DO NOT BE FOOLED. That is just Yoshi using his Ninja deception. Because later in the evening Yoshi will sneak up and kill Koscheck with Ninja throwing stars while he sleeps.
    Yoshiyuki Yoshida +200

Mike Swick -370 vs Jonathan Goulet +300
Spot on with your observation, Bread. No multi-colored hair dye freak is going to win on this night. Halloween is over, you spaz. Another sign pointing to a "Quick Swick" finish... this is a fight for American Troops not Canadian Mounties. Go back to your hockey rink Goulet, ehh!
    Mike Swick -370

    Steve Cantwell -275 vs Razak Al-Hassan +215
As an avid Mike Tyson's Punch Out player I know exactly who you were referring to, Bread. Great Tiger... (sigh), what a great foe he was.

As for the breakdown of the fight, you stole my thunder!!! I was thinking the EXACT same thing. Introducing the All American boy: Steve Cantwell. Hoo-Rah! And introducing his opponent: Razak Al-Hassan. At this time four Marines start repelling down from the rafters and start water-boarding this poor motherfuker. Okay well, let's say this fight doesn't go as planned, then what? I can see a Marine Sniper dropping this dude in the middle of the ring. I'm not impressed after seeing Cantwell in the WEC, but picking against him would be down right un-American.
    Steve Cantwell -275

Tim Credeur -150 vs Nate Loughran +120
I just left more talent in my toilet. Go with the dog at +$.
    Nate Loughran +120

Jim Miller -125 vs Matt Wiman -105
Sticking with the theme of Jackass...

WeeMan Wiman, same difference. Getting kicked in the face or licking a donkey's ass, it's all the same. Wiman is in for pain.
    Jim Miller -125

Luigi Fioravanti -325 vs Brodie Farber +265
This is getting repetitive... Former Marine vs a skinhead. Down with intolerance, Hoo-Rah!
    Luigi Fioravanti -325

Steve Bruno -105 vs Johnny Rees -125
Johnny Rees aka "The Hater Hurter." Oh get real you douche bag. This is totally the queer at the bar with a popped collar, wearing sun glasses inside, a white shell necklace, fake tan, and double fisting Mike's Hard Lemonade. Please Bruno...PLEASE!
    Steve Bruno -105

Ben Saunders -355 vs Brandon Wolff +285
I'm running out of clever things to say. See Bread's breakdown above.
    Ben Saunders -355

Corey Hill -325 vs Dale Hartt +265
Spencer Fisher destroyed a man named Shannon. Dale Hartt lost to a man named Shannon.
    Corey Hill -325

Eddie Sanchez -175 vs Justin McCully +145
Now I'm not up on my karma sutra... Remind me what a "Dirty Sanchez" is. Doesn't that involve some sort of ass play or possibly shitting on someone? Not into anal, but I am open to trying new things.

I believe Koscheck is the goods here in this fight. From what I've seen of Yoshida, he is not much of a striker and quickly looks to take the fight to the ground. He won't have any such luck against Koscheck who will out wrestle anyone at WW who's name is not GSP. I believe Koscheck has the edge in stand up with better footwork & speed, which will allow him to keep Yoshida at bay to fend off any TD attempts and also set up his own take downs - the single leg will be there for Kos all day long seeing as Yoshida is a southpaw. Look for a UD victory coming from Kos as a worst case scenario if he is unable to finish Yoshida off inside the distance.

I also laid the chalk on Swick. A lot of chalk to lay, but I don't see how Swick can lose this one withstanding a lucky punch from Goulet. He is better than Goulet in every aspect and I expect Swick to get a highlight reel KO here against the glass jaw Canadian in this fight.

I also bet Cantwell on the basis it looks to be playing on the America Vs Iraq thing for the troops as has already been pointed out in this thread. I believe it's obviously a set up fight for Cantwell to win to please the troops, no doubt about it.

I had to beat you to some of the punchlines Hoff. lololol!!

I also like the whoever is fighting Tim Credeur. Tim did not impress me at ALL on TUF. But neither did Rob Emerson and I lost the house on him vs Gamburyan.

LOL@ The Hater Hurter! I just left that one alone, although I could've written 3 books about it.

Justin McCully might be a dogplay here at +145. He and Eddie Sanchez are bottom rung heaveyweights so who knows who will win. They both share a recent opponent in Antoni Hardonk, McCully won a decision and Sanchez got knocked out. Might be some value here!

Boys, I'm starting to flip flop. Check out the weigh-in pictures of Razak at UFC.com. The dude is cut! His record is tough to decipher. I've seen a few different records and one includes a lot of unsanctioned fights. These are the circumstances that make a nobody a somebody. Remember Houston Alexander vs Keith Jardine? I actually think Mr. Al-Hassan has a chance to win this fight. I'm sorry Uncle Sam, I have let you down. I never bet all of the fights, but always give a prediction. If I lay some on this fight it will most likely be the underdog.

                                          Main Event Pick

Alright, I've been writing exams recently so I haven't been following these MMA events in the past two weeks. In fact, I just woke up from a nap and happened to see the UFN 16 playing on TV.

I took a look at the odds and as I expected, Koscheck is again, a huge favourite to win this one. I think he's being over-rated and his odds are inflated solely because he's been popularized thanks to his run on the Ultimate Fighter's premiere season. Don't get me wrong, Koscheck can actually fight, but I wouldn't lay -240 against an opponent like Yoshida. Also, Koscheck is coming off of an overwhelming loss to Thiago Alves, and he'll want to avenge this loss to prove he belongs in the UFC.

Yoshida is a fourth-degree black belt in Judo, and has won 9 straight fights, including his impressive debut fight against War Machine (wicked name!), where he was able to secure an anaconda choke, and put War Machine to sleep. Yoshida's record dictates that he's got some power in his punches (10-2, with 6 TKOs, 2 subs, 1 dec). This guy isn't scared to throw punches. Take note, at UFC 88, Yoshida was scheduled to fight Parisyan, but the fight was canceled when Parisyan pulled out of it two-hours before weigh-in due to an injury (Parisyan was paralyzed with fear). Not to mention

Koscheck has noticeably improved his stand-up. I expect that he'll come out strong and he'll most definitely want to put on a show for the fans. He's got enough experience that he won't make the mistake of underestimating Yoshida. Kos also has more than enough gas in the tank to go the distance, but I think he'll have trouble finishing the fight.

I expect that Kos will push the pace of the fight, and Yoshida will be aiming to land a lot of counter-punches. If it goes to the ground, I give Yoshida the edge; this guy has the know-how to control the fight on the ground, and to add to that, he's got a wicked ground and pound along with some nasty elbows.
As for the stand-up, Kos has the edge here. Koscheck has demonstrated some really impressive reflexes on his feet. He evades and dodges punches so well.

Overall, I like my odds with Yoshida at +210 on my book.

Koscheck actually had the KO of the night. Like said before here, he knocked that Asian out...TWICE!!! It was hilarious.

Almost as funny as the Muslim's arm snapping in two. Do they not teach people how to tap in the Qur'an? HAHAHAHAHA!! Unreal.
