    Aldo/Pettis opening line
Is it just me, or does aldo at -160 seem like a total steal? Am I missng something here?

I've already put down 2 units on it in case the line gets worse.

I was talking with my local book and he said -350 on Aldo and said the books won't give Pettis any respect just like they didn't give Edgar respect. I said I thought it was a pick'em. They learned after the Edgar fight that an elite fighter can win 4th and 5th rounds.

I think the line is right on. Pettis has a real chance. He is easily the best striker Aldo will have faced thus far. Unless you are a big Hominick fan. Or think Frankie's T-rex boxing is elite. Pettis has kicks, he has some decent hands. He is fairly quick. No clue how he handles the cut. But on paper skills it is basically a coin flip.

Same deal here. Pettis gets all the love (betting money like Frankie did)it will be impossible to win a decision just like Franky. Pettis has to knock him out unless everyone bets Aldo than Aldo will never win a decision. This is how sadly this shit is when you can't hire ur own judges like Dana wants. This is why boxing is so fuked up unless ur fighter can get a knockout. MMA is has turned into the same game now. Nothing Dana can do about it. We can all can pretend and fall for the line on how awful the judging is yet ten years from now we will be saying the same thing just like they do in boxing.

spot on there, Thor! to elaborate on this major "elephant in the room" issue, i've cobbled together a few posts from a ways back...

            _______________

mma is less frustrating to me than boxing because a much smaller % of the contests go to the "judges"

for me, boxing died FOR GOOD about 30 years ago when Marvin Hagler kicked Ray Leonard's ass and walked away with a split-decision loss

since then the judges who see it as a "beauty contest" have held increasing sway over those who (far better IMNSHO) see it as a "damage contest"...hence the hi-% of unsatisfying robberies...

I get the same feeling at the end of a fight waiting for the scorecards as i do when waiting for penalty kicks in football...why don't they drop all the pretence and pull out a goddam coin? I have gone to bed just before the "decision" or the dumbass penalty kicks cuz i quite simply don't want to know...i've seen the fight or the game and i don't want what passes for judging to ruin the event. (Frazier beat Ali TWICE...as did Ken Norton...and Hearns knocked Leonard down twice and WON their second fight...etc. freaking etc. freaking etc. freaking freaking etc.)...

several years ago...inspired by the straight-up-damage-infliction brilliance of Bernard Hopkins (in particular, his dismantling of heavily-favored Trinidad), i decided to give boxing "another chance"...two razor-thin "defeats" to "boxing as beauty-contest" poster-boy JermaineTaylor...and that was it for me.

RIP boxing...it's turned into "rhythmic gymnastics with occasional punching"...the way u gotta "play to the judges" now, knowing the high likelihood that a "fight" will go to the cards.

Boxing judging has gotten progressively more politicized (due to non-athletic=commercial interests) and shitty in general over the last few decades...Ali/Leonard and Howard Freaking Cosell were the deathknell of the sport....since the mid-70s most judges--intentionally and/or subconsciously--have been increasingly falling prey to the "Ali illusion" that the guy who "looks" better for the first and last 30sec "steals" the round...actual-damage-in-that-round-be-damned...)...I hate freaking "decsions" as they're usually based far more on apparent aesthetics than actual "leather meets skin" damage assessment.

rant over...mma is way better than boxing but still suffers from the "beauty" vs. "damage" schizophrenia. As long as the former holds sway we'll have too many real deals "losing" to golden-haired boys.
