    Alt Runlines
Alt Runlines have been abused the last week and they seem to take a beating in September when favorites tend to do better. Anyone still banging these? I know Mudcat has mentioned he plays them, but September seems like a good month to go the other way on these.

The head guy at Pinnacle once told me they are lifetime negative on alt run line baseball bets. He said this the favorite bet of pro players. I felt kind of square asking him what an alternate run line was .

I gave up on alternate runlines just after the all star break. There are far too many favorites cashing now.

I imagine they're a fairly solid play through the first 4 months of the season, but I switch to focusing more on favorites come August and September.

Your observation is pretty much bang on. They have slowed down in September and I have narrowed my focus a bit, only looking at lines of +250 - +300, instead of just everything over +250.

In fact I have it at the top of my "to do" list to evaluate my alt. runline data today and see exactly what's what.

The way it has gone this year: early season was treading water. June was absolutely awesome - as it has been for the last few years. July was basically treading water - August was pretty awesome.

Ups and downs like that have to be expected when you bet lop-sided dogs. It's the nature of that kind of betting. Very streaky.

I know Mudcat has mentioned he plays them, but September seems like a good month to go the other way on these.

I would never start going the other way in the sense of, actually playing the lop-sided favorite on the alt. runline. You would lose a lot of money on juice. It hasn't been a disaster for dogs; it's just been a bit of a lull. Fading them would cost you a lot.

But I think you probably just mean in the more general sense of looking for good favorites, perhaps on the ML. You may be right about that. I don't do it - but I don't know everything.

I would think most books do little volume on these alternate run lines reagrdless if they are good bets or not.

I usually like to take runlines with -1.5 handicap on slight favorites or alternative rl's. Made some profit last season riding on certain teams and matchups. The payout is very nice like +150 - +200 for a slight home fav. It's just a bit risky taking home teams in runlines. Was burned few times with a last inning walk-off homerun...

that's what kills me...team your backing has the run line covered but the closer doesn't want to walk anybody cause he has two or more run lead so he is throwing over the heart of the play to let the defense help him and so the other guys are getting good pitches to hit and next thing you know instead of winning by 3 your guys hang on to win a 1 run nail biter and you are sol.

Yeah, it's the same with any sport when you're moving away from moneyline betting - the players are playing to win, not to cover any mythical handicap.

                                Yeah, I hate that shit.

But Ive had things work out for me aswell. Where Im sitting in the bottom of the 9th in a tied game and I get homerun with men on base to end the game. Those are sweet, but nerve racking.

You can always just go -1 on the RL, and be safe in those games.

The only time you can count on a team concerned about the cover is college football because top teams are motivated to run up the score. That's why I argue that RLs are not good plays and if you like a big favorite it's safer to parlay that game with another one that you are going to cover anyway.
