Front Page MLB Picks (Fri, Sep 19)
Astros, Pirates to stay Under 9

    Game Time: 09/19/2008 07:05 PM -
By: LT Profits Sports Group | who2beton.com

The Astros have stopped hitting lately after positioning themselves for a playoff run, while the Pirates have scored three runs or less in three of the last four games. With two competent pitchers, go Under.

Randy Wolf of the Houston Astros has been in good form lately and Ian Snell of the Pittsburgh Pirates had had success vs. the Astros, so look for a relatively low scoring game tonight.

Wolf did not pitch well against the Cubs in his last outing, but that snapped a nice string of three consecutive Quality Starts, and he has still not allowed more than four earned runs in any of his last five outings. He also recorded a Quality Start in his only other start vs. Pittsburgh this year, allowing three runs and just four hits in seven innings.

Now Snell has had a disappointing season for the Pirates, but he does have five Quality Starts in his last seven outings. He posted a Quality Start vs. these Astros earlier this month, the fifth time in his last six career starts vs. Houston that he has allowed three runs or less. Furthermore, he is catching the Astros at a good time, as they are batting only .213 as a team over the last 10 games.

With the Pirates scoring three runs or less in three of their last four games, go Under in this spot.

Free Pick: Astros, Pirates Under 9 (-110)

Jake Peavy, San Diego Padres -141 at Washington Nationals

    Game Time: 09/19/2008 07:35 PM -
    By: Al McMordie | bigal.com

San Diego's Jake Peavy is at least trying to reach the 10-win mark on an otherwise disappointing season. Play the Padres Friday when they visit the Washington Nationals.

Our Friday night MLB selection is on the San Diego Padres on the road in the nation's capital over the Washington Nationals.

While the Mets and Phillies battle for the NL Eastern crown, the Brewers battle both of them for the Wild Card, and Los Angeles and Arizona fight it out in the NL West, how about watching a battle of a different sort? Like fighting not to be the worst team in the National League. At this point of the season, the Nationals and Padres have identical overall records, and near-identical home and road records, too.

Tonight, last year's Cy Young winner Jake Peavy goes into Washington's new ballpark to try to salvage some sense of dignity from this mostly-forgettable 2008 campaign. Sure, he still has a great ERA (2.77) and WHIP (1.17), but his W/L record of 9-11, and his team's record of 11-15 in games which he's started tell you all you need to know about what kind of season it's been for him and the Padres. Needless to say, there won't be any Cy Young for the 27-year-old righthander this season.

One thing that has to be on Peavy's mind is that, for five straight seasons (going back to 2003, the year after he broke into the majors) the San Diego ace has had double-digit wins. He must be thinking that there won't be a seemingly easier spot to keep that streak alive than tonight in Washington as his next scheduled start (and last of the season) will probably be next Thursday in Los Angeles against a much better Dodger team that might still be fighting for a division title and ticket to the playoffs.

Look for a good outing by Peavy. Take the Padres.

    Free Pick: Padres -141

Play Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins Over 8½

      Game Time: 09/19/2008 07:10 PM -
      By: Steve Merril | 10starpicks.com

Both the Phillies and the Marlins have been getting the job done with their bats lately, and that should send Philadelphia and Florida over the total Friday night in Miami.

Both offenses enter this game red-hot as the Philadelphia Phillies are 8-3 Over in their past 11 games while the Florida Marlins are 6-3 Over in their past nine games.

Philadelphia is averaging 6.3 runs per game offensively in their past 10 games with an average total score of 10.7 runs per game; the Marlins are averaging 7.1 runs during their past nine games with an average total score of 10.8 runs per game. My pitcher performance ratings also predict a below average outing for the Phillies’ Brett Myers who has pitched well during the past month, but still has a weak 5.46 ERA and 1.56 WHIP on the road this season.

      Free Pick: Phillies-Marlins Over 8½ (-105)

Randy Wolf, Houston Astros -117 at Pittsburgh Pirates

        Game Time: 09/19/2008 07:05 PM -
        By: Marc Lawrence | playbook.com

Randy Wolf has cashed in eight of his 10 starts with Houston since the July trade. Back the Astros to break their losing skid Friday night at the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Houston Astros look to get back on the winning track and back into the NL Wild Card race when they send Randy Wolf to the mound against the Pirates in Pittsburgh tonight.

Wolf has come up big for the Astros since coming over to Houston in late July, cashing eight of his 10 team starts. With the Pirates 5-13 on Fridays, including 1-5 their last six at home on Friday, look for Wolf to improve to 9-1 in his career team starts against Pittsburgh tonight. We recommend a 1-unit play on Houston with Wolf.

        Free Pick: Astros -117

Play Oakland A's -121 to sink the Seattle Mariners

          Game Time: 09/19/2008 10:05 PM -
By: Jimmy the Moose | sportspic.com

Seattle will be happy when this nightmare season comes to a close. Back Oakland behind Dana Eveland Friday at home when they take on Felix Hernandez and the Mariners.

The Seattle Mariners' players and organization are counting down the days until this horrible season ends.

Seattle is 20-44 in their last 64 road games. In their last 13 road games vs. a left-handed starter they are 4-9. Seattle comes into this one having lost eight straight. The Mariners have dropped Felix Hernandez' last three starts.

Oakland has won four of their last five games. The A's are 9-3 in their last 12 games opening up a series. The A's have won seven of their last eight home games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.

The A's have won four of Dana Eveland's last five starts. They are 5-1 in his last six home starts. Play on the Oakland.

          Free Pick: Athletics -121
