Front Page MLB Picks (Sat, Sep 13)
Play Angels on run line vs. Mariners

    Game Time: 09/13/2008 09:05 PM -
    By: Christopher Quinn | christopherquinn.mysbrforum.com

The Angels became the first team to reach 90 wins on the season last night and they should make it 91 this evening with Jon Garland on the mound against the Seattle Mariners.

Coming off a three-game winning streak, the Angels look to continue their dominance in the AL West today as they blow past the Mariners and push towards their first 100 win season.

Jon Garland will be taking the hill this afternoon for the Angels, setting up the Angels' third win in the series on their way to a sweep of the Mariners. He is 13-8 thus far in the season and has an ERA of 4.52. He’s an impressive pitcher at home and is undefeated in his last three starts.

Ryan Feierabend will be getting the rock for the Mariners tonight with an away ERA of 11.42. Look for the Angels' offense to smash on this weak southpaw and easily cover the run the line.

Tori Hunter gets the start in centerfield after serving his two-game suspension and taking an extra day off last night to let his tweaked quad heal. Look for Hunter’s red hot bat coupled with the continued strength of Vladimir Guerrero to boost the Angels' offense and give Frankie Rodriguez a shot at the record books with save #58. We saw Hunter dancing “The Swim” during the Angels division-clinching celebration on Wednesday and he has since joked that it “was part of his therapy.” If it’s good enough to dance on gentlemen, it’s good enough to bet on.

I’ll just let the facts speak for themselves: Seattle is 4-9 in their last 13 games on the road, 1-5 in the last six against the Angels, and 5-15 in their last 20 games when playing on the road against the Angels. On the flip side of the coin, the Angels are 4-1 in their last five games, 6-2 in their last eight at home, 5-1 in their last six against Seattle, and are a staggering 15-5 in their last 20 games when playing at home against Seattle. And the icing on the cake is the Angels have beaten the run line the last two nights against the Mariners.

You guys don’t need me to tell you, but here it is. The bookies want action on the Angels' side of the run line, so let’s give it to them. Take the -1½ run line with a price of +125 or better for a two-unit play.

    Free Pick: Angels -1½ (+125)

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants -117 at San Diego Padres

    Game Time: 09/13/2008 10:05 PM -
    By: Matt Fargo | sportspic.com

Tim Lincecum is making a strong case for the NL Cy Young this year, and this is a great price to get the Giants' ace. Side with San Francisco on the road at San Diego.

This is a fantastic price for Tim Lincecum who is making a strong case for National League Cy Young. He is 16-3 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 29 starts on the season. and has been better on the road than at home posting a 2.32 ERA while going 9-1 in 15 road starts.

Lincecum has allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his last nine outings so he is in there giving the Giants a chance to win every time out. Against San Diego he has a 1.13 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in seven career starts.

He will be opposed by Chris Young who has been up and down since his return from the disabled list. He is coming off a great start against the Brewers as he pitched a complete game in a 10-1 victory. He almost made history as he was four outs away from a perfect game and that works in our favor here and it is very unlikely we will see another dominating effort. He has struggled against the Giants throughout his career as he is 1-3 with a 4.06 ERA in seven starts. Play San Francisco for 1½ units.

    Free Pick: Giants -117

Washington Nationals & Florida Marlins Over 9

      Game Time: 09/13/2008 07:10 PM -
      By: Al McMordie | bigal.com

Last night's contest between these two was a pitchers duel, but tonight's should see plenty of runs. Play the Nationals and Marlins over the total in Florida on Saturday.

Our Saturday night MLB selection is on the Washington Nationals and Florida Marlins scoring over the total in the Sunshine State.

At 10-8 with an ERA of 4.49, Nationals righthander Tim Redding would hardly be on anyone's best starter list this season. But Redding has perhaps become the best "opportunistic" starter in all of baseball. Consider this statistic:

Although the Nationals have a winning percentage of .381 with only 56 wins, they have an amazing .667 win percentage (20-10) when Redding takes to the mound for them. And just how amazing is this stat?

Compare this to another NL starter named Tim. Tim Lincecum of the Giants is probably the favorite to win the Cy Young, and his team has a much better win percentage (.445) than the Nats. But their win percentage in Lincecum's starts is incredibly slightly less (19-10) than Washington's is with Redding. There can only be one explanation for the Nats performance on Redding's nights. Run support.

Redding gets plenty of it, and although all of the Nats starters have been getting surprising run support lately, it seems that Redding has been the recipient of it all season. The overall win percentage hasn't carried over to Redding's starts this season against the Marlins. In four meetings that featured Redding, the Nats are 1-3, but the runs have still been there. All four of these games have gone a total of at least 10 runs. Take the Over.

      Free Pick: Nationals-Marlins Over 9 (-105)
