BRITISH COLUMBIA LIONS (3-2) AT EDMONTON ESKIMOS (3-2)

      DATE & TIME: Thursday, July 31, 10 p.m. (et).

GAME NOTES: It's been a rough two weeks for the Edmonton Eskimos.

The Eskimos opened their two-game road trip in Toronto a couple of weeks back.
Not only did Edmonton allow the Argos to march 109 yards for the game-winning
touchdown in a 35-31 defeat, but the defense suffered a huge blow when rush
end Fred Perry sustained a gruesome dislocated ankle and broken leg late in
      the contest.

Then last weekend in a 19-13 road win in Hamilton, the Eskimos lost veteran
receiver Jason Tucker to a neck injury that required he leave the field on a
backboard, be loaded into an ambulance and rushed to a nearby hospital. A day
later, Tucker undergoes season-ending surgery that questions arise whether the
married father of four girls will ever play football again.

Amazingly, though, on the two-yard reception that was injured, Tucker had the
presence of mind to recover his own fumble and ensure the Eskimos maintained
the ball in a tight football game. But it was the only catch Tucker had on the
      night.

As has been the case for most of the season, Edmonton beat Hamilton thanks to
its aerial attack. Ricky Ray was 28-of-47 passing for 356 yards and a
touchdown to go with an interception. The Eskimos managed just 83 yards
      rushing.

Kelly Campbell led the way with five catches for 119 yards and a TD while
former Ticat Kamau Peterson had eight receptions for 104 yards.

But the big star of the Eskimos win was the club's defense, which recorded
eight sacks and an interception against Hamilton.

The B.C. Lions seem to have found their stride. After opening the season with
two straight losses, B.C. has won three straight, including a 36-34 decision
over Montreal last week thanks to a late field goal from Paul McCallum.

Jarious Jackson finished 22-of-41 passing for 319 yards with a touchdown, but
also two interceptions. Paris Jackson was the club?s receiving leader with
five catches for 124 yards and the touchdown.

Running back Joe Smith, the CFL's rushing leader last year, returned to the
starting lineup and had 97 yards on 18 carries and scored a touchdown for the
      Lions.

Defensively, safety Barron Miles had two interceptions.

The numbers: B.C. is 1-1 on the road this year but 0-2 within the West
Division. Edmonton is 2-0 at home and 1-1 against conference competition.

Keys to the game: Give Edmonton the psychological edge here because there is
no doubt the Eskimos will want to play well in Tucker?s absence. But the truth
of the matter is not having Tucker is a huge hole for the Esks to fill. Now,
opposing defenses will be able to double up on Campbell and almost dare the
Eskimos to find someone else to beat them.

The other factor is this: Edmonton's offensive attack is most a passing one.
The run game hasn't really been a consistent factor for the Eskimos. And
that's bad news against a pretty solid B.C. Lions defense that really knows
how to get after the quarterback.

B.C.'s offense counters with a lot more versatility. Jackson has seemingly
established himself as the club's starter and has a solid receiving corps to
go to. But the big thing is the Lions also have a solid running game with
      Smith and backup Stephan Logan.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: B.C. 28, Edmonton 21.
