He played in one game against Boston in the first round and two against Houston in the World Series, scoring the only run in Chicago's 1-0 Game 4 victory that completed a sweep of the Astros.

TORONTO: RHP A.J. Burnett left after four innings. He allowed three runs on five hits in four innings. He threw 78 pitches. Burnett, who signed a $55 million, five-year deal with the Blue Jays in the offseason after spending seven seasons with the Florida Marlins, began the season on the DL after scar tissue broke off in his elbow March 18 during spring training. The Indians placed RHP Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day DL with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle. To replace Betancourt, who had a 6.43 ERA in eight relief appearances, the Indians called up rookie RHP Brian Slocum, a 2002 second-round pick, from Triple-A Buffalo, where he had a 1.93 ERA in five relief appearances.

Pierzynski and Joe Crede got haircuts as ordered by team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. They were well-coiffed before Friday night's game, actually getting their new cuts as part of a promotion on Thursday. Shelton has collected 17 extra-base hits this month, the most by a Tigers player in April since 1960. ``I think for a young hitter, he uses the whole field as well as any young hitter,'' Leyland said before Friday night's series opener with Seattle. ``I think that's probably the biggest thing to be honest with you.'' Shelton's nine homers are one why of matching Cecil Fielder's 10 homers in April 1996 for the club record for homers during April. In addition, Shelton's 64 total bases are the best by a Tigers player during April since 1960, while his .426 batting average is third best.

On Friday night, Hargrove said Guardado didn't need to hear that from him. ``I don't think that in his mind he thought that after three weeks, he's out of a job,'' Hargrove said. ``But as a manager, there are a few times a year you get to express something in loyalty for your players like that and that was one of those times.'' Guardado, 35, blew a save on Monday at Boston when he gave up a winning home run to Mark Loretta. In six games and 5 2-3 innings this season, he's 0-2 with an 11.12 ERA. Fielder started 0-11, but has gone 8-for-15 with a homer, six RBIs and five runs in the last four games. ... I have to win,''' Girardi said. ``You can't approach it that way. Your start is no more important than the start the next day.'' ... Girardi was saddened to hear Yankees minor league manager Oscar Acosta was killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. Girardi said he got the phone call from Phillies pitcher Jon Lieber. ``We had him in Chicago as our pitching coach, we loved him,'' Girardi said. ``I had him in New York, I loved him.''

Eischen had an 18.00 ERA. ``He's struggling,'' general manager Jim Bowden said Friday. ``He's not throwing like he's able to throw, and Frank just wanted to make sure he was OK and he said he was, said he's healthy. The more I can get consistent the better hopefully I can be. That's something I hope there's a lot more of this year.'' ... RHP Dave Borkowski, who was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday, arrived in Houston not long before the clubhouse opened on Friday. He said he thinks he made an impression on Astros officials in spring training. ``They liked me in spring and I think as long as I went out there and kept pitching well, hopefully my name stuck in their heads,'' he said. ``After seeing that I'm doing the job down there...they have faith in me and trust in me and want to use me.''

Manager Jim Tracy said his return wasn't unexpected. ``He was adamant about doing whatever was necessary to get back in here,'' Tracy said. ``It doesn't surprise me, that's who he is and what he's about.'' ... Tracy said the fact his team has been competitive in all its losses, including the two recent ones to St. Louis is encouraging. ``You want your club to get to the point where it realizes how good it is and lives up to its potential,'' he said. ``We can compete and play with these clubs. You can't let them overwhelm you. If you're going to change the fortunes of your ball club you've got to compete with these teams.''

SAN FRANCISCO: The Giants won't rush the return of LHP Noah Lowry, who is on the DL with a strained right oblique muscle. ``This is an injury that has a way of returning,'' manager Felipe Alou said. ``We want to make sure that we he comes back he will be able to finish the year.'' ... Felipe is committed to OF Randy Winn hitting in the leadoff spot. ``Randy is a No. 1 guy and Omar Vizquel is a No. 2 guy,'' Alou said. ``Our problem isn't scoring runs.'' ...
