Not a genius capper by any means, but i first look at how many innings a starter averages per start and how many innings they've averaged in their last 5. Then i look at their pen and see who all is available and how rested they are. Obviously if the pitcher only last 5-6 innings and the top 3 pen guys are unavailable i dont touch it.

The day of the game covers has the unavailable guys highlighted under the "bullpen" section of each game matchup

Just as an example, Beem and Van Benshoten are unavailable tomorrow for the pirates.

That's a start actually. I do that but in addition, if I like the starting pitcher/lineup matchups, and there isn't a big bullpen edge for the other team, I'll still take them for the game. If there is a bullpen edge, I'll take the team I like on the five inning line.

but the lineups don't come out until an hour before the game right

If I use local people for games I am on a time constriction need to use the off shore more I guess

so anyway where the lineups get checked out at

Well you can either use prospective lineups or wait until about an hour or so before game time. They are posted on ESPN or Yahoo! or any site with scores. I usually cap the games while thinking of a prospective lineup. Usually a manager uses certain lineups against righties and another against lefties. Some players take certain day games off as well. A shortcut would be to use the teams splits against right-handed and left-handed pitching if no one significant should be sitting out that day (or on the DL).
