As stated a few weeks ago, risking money with the Astros on a smaller unit basis is really the only way to go, if at all. The bottom-line here is simple the Astros are hitting the ball and scoring with some consistency while the Giants are just plain inept from an offensive standpoint. Everyone knows or should know the situation here regarding both teams and pitchers, so not to belabor the point with stats, J Happ is coming back tonight after being sent down to OKC to regain his control (3 games 1.501 ERA) and Bumgarner struggled horribly against the new Astros squad in his last outing surrendering 6 ERs on 11 hits here in Houston last week. I lean conservatively to the Astros RL or Astros TT Over 3 due solely to their ability to put runs on the board. Your call and great job to those of you who cashed the +243ML last night.

8/27 Plus Plays

*Detroit RL (Verlander / Pavano)

Twins have been playing terrible at home and it has been painful to watch them struggle offensively. It only gets worse today, if that’s possible, when Verlander steps on the mound. The twins have scored 5 runs in the last 6 games. I have a marginal record on RL plays and generally don’t play them on road teams, but the Twins are not a good home team, especially as of late, (28-38) losing the last six in a row. Conversely, Detroit has been very impressive offensively and they should be able to provide the necessary run support to cover versus Pavano. Last two match-ups between these two with Verlander pitching (2-0 1.15 ERA) (W 6-2) and (W 7-1). Verlander with his 20th win today, first Tiger to accomplish this since Bill Gullickson, 1991. If he wins the 20th, he will be the first Tiger in 40 years to win 20 games before Sept 1st. Is this a big deal? I would believe so.

White Sox / Mariners Under 7 (Danks / Pineda)

This is going to be another low scoring game especially with Danks and Pineda. Both pitchers have been throwing very well and both have been victums of their bullpens after great outings. I backed the White sox last night but rather the Under in this coin toss.

Lean again to Texas over Angels (Santana / Wilson)

Texas is one of the few teams that has had Santana's number on a conistent basis. They bounced back very nicely versus Haren last night and they will walk away with the win with Wilson at their back tonight. Texas needs to further separate themselves from the Angels in the standings. Pending line.

According to The Giants Club – Surkamp’s from Double-A, where he is 10-4 with a 2.02 ERA in 23 appearances (22 starts). In 142 1/3 innings, Surkamp has struck out 165 and walked 44, while allowing 110 hits. In his most recent outing last Sunday, Surkamp allowed Akron two hits in eight innings. From all accounts, Surkamp’s fastball hovers in the 87-88-mph range and isn’t overly impressive. Surkamp’s curveball, which is extremely nasty, is his KO pitch. The Giants will face Bret Myers, who has been an ER machine this year, especially as of his last four games. He gave up 6 in the first inning to Colorado in his last outing and 12 ER in the 3 prior. This is truly a ridiculous game to give an opinion on. The Giants could barely hit J Happ and Myers is considered better than Happ. Conversely, Surkamp is a Double-A junk ball pitcher that the free swinging Astros rookies might be able to get a read on; Might being the operable word. Depending on the line the safe call is a pass or if the line is favorable I would lean with the experience of Myers over the worthless offense of the Giants and their rookie starter. 8/28 Plus Plays


*Dodgers / Colorado Under 7.5 ( Chacin / Eovaldi )

I have been following the performances of Eovaldi at Arizona, Houston, and St Louis. So far this guy shows no signs of slowing down and has been an extremely consistent pitcher. Until he proves differently or the situation doesn’t justify, I will continue tailing the Dodgers or taking the Under when he is on the mound. Obviously, Chacin is very good as well and has performed perfectly against the Dodgers carrying a career WHIP of 1.159 and winning his last three meetings (0-3 Ov/Un). This should be fairly low scoring and hopefully Under 7.5.

* Nationals / Reds Under 7.5 (Cueto / Zimmerman )

Cueto has extremely good home stats carrying a WHIP of 0.887 and averaging an impressive 6.8 innings. In comparison, Zimmerman has been good on the road with an ERA of 3.02 and WHIP of 1.068. Cueto’s career stats on the mound vs. the Nationals are 4 of 5 Under the total. 11 of 15 games have gone Under the Total when these two play each other over the previous 3 seasons.

*White Sox ML ( Floyd / Vargas )

I have been on and off the White sox for the past two weeks. The only games in which I lost the opinion were the games I didn’t side with them (Ranger’s Series). They have been very impressive offensively always finding ways to win or outright leading the entire game. With Gavin Floyd on the mound doing quite well on the road (7-4) with 3.07 ERA and a WHIP of 1.110 I will side for the third time in this series with CWS.

* Arizona ML (I Kennedy / Luebke )

I have had good success this season with Kennedy and fully expect that he continues his dominance at home. Kennedy is 3-0 vs. SD with a WHIP of 0.93. These pitchers faced off in Arizona on 7/27/11 with Kennedy walking away with the win (4-3). I had the same opinion then as I do now, Arizona wins. This will be a low scoring affair with these two pitchers on the mound and the Under is an attractive bet but due to the fact these starters average around 6 innings I cannot trust the relievers to keep this under the low total of 7.5. The last three meetings with Kennedy vs. SD have gone Over 5.5, 7.5 and 9.5, respectively so I’ll lay the chalk and stick with Arizona in a close one.

*Under 6.5 -105

Norris and Cain are more than capable of keeping this series on track to follow the Under trend today. Home starts for Cain have resulted in an ERA of 2.99 with a 1.074 WHIP and in his last three overall; he has managed to lower those numbers to 2.14 and 0.95. Norris is the Astros most experienced starter and if history repeats itself; he should fare better than the Myers and Happ in keeping the Giants off the bases and this game low scoring.

8/30 Plus Plays

*Cubs ML +125 (Garza / Vogelsong)

I am burnt out watching the struggling Giants offense after the two series against the Astros over the past couple of weeks. Vogelsong might have decent season stats, but I don’t believe he is going to stop the Cubs from putting up the runs necessary to win, especially after losing his last two starts to the Astros. In fact, Vogelsong’s career stats versus the Cubs are 3-4 with an ERA of 6.75 with a WHIP of 1.800. He did win against them back in May and June, but in my humble opinion, that was a different Giants team from a mental standpoint offensively. I’m siding with the Cubs plus money with the added advantage of Garza on the bump. Fade, Tail, or Watch.

*Angels / Seattle Over 8 ( Williams / Vasquez )

I don’t know if many of you remember Jerome Williams on the Cubs or later on the Nationals, but he has had a very up and down career. He is more than capable of blowing up tonight against the Mariners. As reported, the Mariners want to rest their young starters, so the Angels will be facing Anthony Vasquez, who carries a losing minor league record with very average minor league stats. With these two pitchers on the bump, you would have to believe that both teams will be very active offensively; yes even the Mariners. Fade, Tail or Watch.

*St Louis / Milwaukee Over 8.5 +105 ( Jackson / Marcum )
This is contrary to what most would believe due to the Brewer's total trends, but having watched Jackson's road performances, Marcum's poor career stats versus St Louis, and both team's propensity to score I believe this game should surpass 8.5.

*White Sox ML ( Swarzak / Stewart )

I will continue to roll with the White Sox.

Pittsburgh ML -118 (Morton / Sosa)

Morton’s last appearance and loss versus the Astros back in July was actually not a bad outing as he held them scoreless allowing three hits over 5 innings. This game was back when Bourne, Pence, and Jeff Keppinger were in the Astros lineup. Morton is facing an entirely different club this time, albeit the new guys are having some success, but they lack the experience of the previous lineup and this is yet another new pitcher with a lot of experience to face. Conversely, Henry Sosa will start for the Astros carrying a 6.55 ERA and WHIP of 1.273. Henry averages around 3.7 ERs per outing giving up as many as 8 ERs in his last home start. I lean to the Pirates on the early low ML. Additionally, I will review the TT once posted later in the morning.

Brewers / Astros

*Brewers RL (Greinke / Harrell)


Greinke is 2-0 when starting against the Astros with an ERA of 1.20 and a WHIP of 1.000. Last start in Houston, Greinke won 7-3 allowing 1 ER on 4 hits. The Astros start Lucas Harrell, the 26-year-old right-hander posted a 2.63 ERA and 94/50 K/BB ratio over 126 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season. Per MLB; Harrell has gone 12-5 with a 2.63 ERA in 21 starts in the minors this season, but has a career 5.28 ERA in the majors. In my humble opinion, Harrell gets pounded by a frustrated Brewer’s offense not wanting to drop another game especially here where they dominated in their last visit.

9/4 Plus Plays..

*Dodgers ML -130 (Kershaw / Delgado)

Kershaw’s dominance and the hot bats of the Dodgers are enough for the win again today.

*Arizona ML +112 (Hudson / Vogelsong)

Backing Arizona again today. Vogelsong has been sliding backwards ever since the Astros series here in Houston.

*Cardinals -1 (Arroyo / Jackson)

Arroyo is only consistent when it comes to giving up hits and ERs and that trend won’t bode well against the Card’s lineup, especially thinking that they can catch the Brewers.

* Twins / Angels Over 9 -105 (Slowey / Pineiro)

Over stats/trends on these pitchers and team vs. team are extremely favorable.

Quite a few plays to consider, so play a couple or fade them all, either way,, Good Luck!

Against my better judgment, I trusted the Astros for the first time in weeks. Norris no shows and gives up 5. Wandy should fare better but not going there again. Marcum has surrendered only 3 ERs in his last 20 innings. Let’s see how this one plays out
