*White Sox / Cleveland Under 8 ( Masterson / Humber )


I have sided with Masterson on numerous occasions with success, as you have seen on this thread. He is very solid in all situations. Generally, Masterson will scare the hell out of you by giving up a first inning run after which he settles to zeros, frame after frame. Let’s hope that’s the case here! Most of you are very familiar with Justin and Humber so I won’t belabor you with too many stats. In Masterson's 3 starts vs. the Tribe, (3-0 Under/Overs) with a 1.21 ERA pitching 22 innings with 14 Ks. Humber has been somewhat erratic lately but he is still maintaining a low 1.144 WHIP. My only concern here in this situation is Humber, but this is a spot where he needs to turn it around and find the balance he had earlier.


*Nationals ML ( Zimmerman / Arroyo )

I have not been an Arroyo fan this season especially after watching him live at the Astros. Like I have said before, there is no doubt he use to be an excellent pitcher, but this season he has been mostly inconsistent putting his team in early deficits (ERs 3 to 4 on avg.) Last game was his best outing by far, but in my humble opinion, I do not expect a repeat against this scrappy Nationals team inside the beltway where they play their best ball. Another angle that should be noted is the poor offensive struggles of the Reds. I sided with them last night and it was frustrating watching the number of runners stranded in scoring position, which has been a constant theme for them over the past weeks.

Siding with the As Over trend of 24+ since the break instead of Toronto on the ML. Romero is excellent and a concern here, but after reviewing their previous matchups with pitchers of equal quality, the games still find their way over 6.5, respectively. As everyone is aware Oakland has a lot of baggage when it comes to errors and that has obviously affected some of the previous outcomes. As far as the ML bet, Toronto has burned me in late innings on two occasions lately, so I’ll let these two duke it out and hopefully it surpasses 6 runs. Pass, Tail, or Watch.

What are your thoughts on the Rangers tonight? Seems like a strong pick to me although I don't like road favorites as a rule.

Local news said they arrived at 5AM in Chicago and that they were pissed about the walk off, but overall happy about the series. Chicago burned through a lot of relievers due to Humber getting dinged in the first. I'm bias in my opinion because of the team, but I think once they shake off the travel hang over they will put some runs on the board against Peavey and hopefully walk away with a win in a close game. The only reason I'm thinking close game is due to CWS are hitting well, Harrison, and the travel hang over. At -115 ML and their offense you would think this is worth a play. I'll put a play on it and once again I'm a fan and bias so its up to you especially since you dont like road teams.

I'm heading out to drink and watch an under at the Stros. GL tonight!

8/20 Plus Plays

* Rangers ML -128 ( Ogando / Danks )

Danks is 1-4 career vs. the Rangers with a 4.00 ERA and WHIP of 1.33. Ogando dominated the White Sox in his last outing in May allowing only 5 hits, 0 ERs, and 3 BB. Ogando over his past three has a ridiculous 7.05 ERA and 1.884 WHIP going 2-0 relying completely on the offense to save his ass. He seems to go back and forth between good and bad outings lately. Fortunately, tomorrow’s outcome will not solely depend on his A game with the Rangers hitting on all cylinders offensively and the backup of a strong set of relievers if he stumbles. The CWS are 1-6 as home dogs this season and 27-36 at home. Worth noting, this is a bias fan play for me and I will take the early line here. Fade, Tail or Watch.

8/20 Daily Astros Opinion

*Giants / Astros Under 7.5 (Bumgarner / Lyles )


Wandy pitched an excellent game last night and backed up with run support to win, Great Job!

Today they will face Bumgarner, who is having an excellent August (1.64 ERA and WHIP of 1.045), pitching 22 innings allowing only 4 ERs on 18 hits and striking out an amazing 24 hitters. Bumgarner has only had one rough outing over the past 30 days and that was in Cincy on 7/30 where he allowed 5 ERs over 4 innings. Generally he averages 7 innings surrendering an average of 2 ERs. Bumgarner’s win problem is due solely to the lack of run support, which is no secret. Giants were shut out last night for the 12th time this season.

The Giants overview sounds eerily familiar to the Astros but on opposite sides of the win spectrum. Astros start Jordon Lyles who we are all familiar with as the Astros prize pitching asset. Lyles has a pitching limit of 165 innings placed on him by the club in order to preserve his arm. Currently he has reached 143 innings averaging 5.6 innings per game, so his time is limited. During his last four outings, Lyles pitched 23 innings surrendering 19 ERs on 31 hits with 11 ks. August (8.89 ERA and WHIP of 1.667) has been rough but this kid has a lot of potential as I stated before.

Neither pitcher has faced the opposing lineups which should make things interesting. I have no doubt Bumgarner will dominate the Astros hitters if he continues his excellent run of strike outs (24-5 Ks to BBs). RHP Lyles on the other hand might have some problems if he continues to allow 7 ERs like the previous 2 outings. Lyles at home and the fact that he is facing an inept offense might keep this one somewhat less lopsided. In my opinion, I can’t envision another Astros win against Bumgarner especially if he takes this outing through 7, which he is more than capable of doing. The Giants have only scored 4 runs or more six times in the last 23 games. My point being the Giants ML or Giants -1 seems like a fair option with a solid lean to the Under of 7.5. Obviously this is all predicated on Bumgarner pitching as he has for the last 30 days and Lyles bringing his B game at a minimum and holding down the ERs against a terrible offense. Your call on the options presented and as usual I hope this information is helpful.. Pass, Tail, or Watch.

Hey man I agree with some of your choices, thank you for taking the time to share your picks.

If I could add some opinion:

Lyles has been really struggling lately, giving up 7 ER in his last 2 starts, its questionable whether he'll bounce back, going 1-7 in decisions and giving up 4-7ER at home, the good news however is @ home his ER is 1.4, and .13 WHIP lower at home. Bochy was suggesting Kung-Fu will be back in the lineup tomorrow, I'm stuck on the fence about this lower...

I'm leaning on LA 2morrow aswell. posted up.

Lyles stats seem pretty horrible but this is the same guy that pitched against the Red Sox at home and held a 1-1 game through 6 or 7 innings. He is also the same pitcher I watched hold the Rangers down to next to nothing, a month or so ago. I know it looks bad statiscally, but against the Giants he should fair well enough to keep this total under especially indoors in A/C and a friendly crowd behind him. Obviously, I could be wrong and have been many times on the Stros, but how many lack luster scoring outings have you watched with the Giants and separately with the Astros. Add Bumgarner to the mix who is red hot right now with 24 ks in 3 recent games. Astros, little to no scoring with Lyles allowing the Giants to 4-5 and theres your Under. 5-2, 6-1 or whatever.

LA Dodger / Colorado - Lilly has excellent stats against them and gets the run support in Colorado as seen last night. I have to shake the cobb webs out and study this a little more but from 10,000 feet this looks like a good lean.

I like Morton in this situation against the hot and cold bats of the Reds especially with Willis on the mound. A good friend of mind warned me about Willis and I never listened because I thought his older stats were excellent. After not listening, I backed Willis against the Astros, watched the game live, and the Astros started the game by scoring 2 runs immediately in the first inning and finished it by winning 5-4. Willis' speed and control are a problem from my layman's perspective and this should give the Pirates the advantage as it did for the Astros less than 18 days ago.

Morton on the other hand is a victim of circumstance. He has pitched very well and has not gotten the run support in order to take advantage of his performance. Take a look at his stats they are very impressive; last 3 games he has allowed 1 run over 22.1 innings with 16 Ks. He has had one bad outing in the last month against Philly where he allowed 6 ERs on the road.

When making an opinion on this game, you would have to consider Pittsburgh’s offensive struggles and losses during their fall from grace over the past weeks. The exact same point can be made about the Reds. I will lean to the Pirates and Morton with hopes of the Pirates providing him the much needed run support to win. The Over/Under seems to reflect what happens when these two meet like last night, but today it should fall short of 9 if Morton performs as he should. Tail, Fade or Watch and BOL.

I have been riding this over trend for awhile except for last night fortunately. With Gonzales and Alvarez I think we might have another shot at hitting it again. Fade Tail or Watch,,,BOL


*Angels / Baltimore Over 8.5

Both of these pitchers have given up a number of hits and runs. Please read the stats yourself and see, but here is a small taste (Pineiro WHIP 2.079 / Hunter allowed 25 hits in 3 games).

*Twins / Baltimore Over 8.5 ( Z Britton / Pavano )

Baltimore allowed 24 runs over the weekend in LA bringing the grand total allowed to 40 over the past 7 days. Of Baltimore’s last 13 games 10 where over the total of 7.5 (2 at 7.5) or greater. Britton has a 24.17 ERA with a WHIP of 4.423 over his last 3 games going 0-3 and 3-0 over the total of 8.5 or greater. Britton over three has allowed 17 ERs off 25 hits with only 5 Ks. Britton didn’t make it out of the first inning twice in those starts. In comparison, the Twins start Carl Pavano, who is 0-1 in his last 3 pitching 22.3 innings allowing only 5 runs on a very high 28 hits. Pavano had a very tough outing versus Baltimore in April (0-11) giving up 7 ERs over 4.7 innings. Obviously, no one should expect a repeat, but Pavano has had an up and down year and I do believe Baltimore will put up enough runs to assist in this game going over, especially if Pavano follows his trend of allowing 9 hits per game. Tonight seems like a good spot for the Twins to grab a win and for this game to go over the total. Fade, Tail, or Watch.

*St Louis / Dodgers Under 7 (Eovaldi / Carpenter )

I watched Eovaldi first in Arizona and then against the Astros in LA and he was incredibly impressive in both outings. Between Carpenter and Eovaldi this should be a low scoring game and will hopefully stay under 7. Tail, Fade, or Pass.

*Brewers RL (Greinke / Lincoln )

Greinke has been extremely solid and no team has been able to slow the roll of Milwaukee as of late. They will mostly like take both today but I see this as the easier.

*Rangers ML ( Bedard / Wilson)

As I have written many times in this thread, the Rangers are a bias play for me. So pass on this one or play it however you might like with better value.

Obviously the Astros are coming off a surprising series with the Giants. In the last three series the Astros have been very productive offensively and their starters have performed well. This game should be interesting as well with Myers on the mound; he is a career 6-0 vs. Colorado carrying a 3.61 ERA and WHIP of 1.204. In Brett’s last three starts (5.22 ERA and WHIP 1.46), he has surrendered 12 ERs on 23 hits with 14 ks. All of the games have gone over the total (7.5, 8.5, and 9). In comparison, the Rockies roll into tonight winning 2 of 3 versus the Dodgers. RHP Jhoulys Chacin will take the mound with an ERA of 3.59 and WHIP of 1.24. His last three games have been somewhat shaky with two losses surrendering 10 ERs on 19 hits with 11 walks. Both of these teams are coming into tonight with good offensive trends to the over and adding fuel to that fire will be Coors Field, Myer’s propensity for ERs, and Chacin’s BBs per game. Lean to the over. Pass, Tail, or Fade.

I posted this in another thread but was looking for thoughts:

Any thoughts on the Rockies today vs Houston? No in depth analysis yet but simply a case of two teams going in different directions. The Rockies are starting to hit on this homestand while Houston seems ready for a regression after a nice run at home. Norris can certainly put together a solid start but his last four outings have been mediocre outside of a nice one against the offensively challenged Dodgers. I'm curious whether White crossed paths with any of the Astros in the minors in the last couple of years. If not, I like the play even more. Thinking about going hard on them -1. Any thoughts from anyone on here would be appreciated!

Benny, I would not discount Norris when making a decision about this game. In my humble opinion, Norris will most likely give the Astros 5 good innings in which to keep the game closer than yesterday’s early blow out. Last night, Brett Myers was a little bit easier to predict because he is just not pitching nearly as well as last year giving up earned runs like candy, but Norris is much more consistent. You mentioned 3 of 4 mediocre outings as of late. The local/National press reports and attributes his problems to a re-occurring blister issue, yet the same sources say he is good to go at game time with the issue resolved on the next outing.

In my opinion, once Norris steps out and the relievers step in, this game should open up and give you the breathing room necessary to cover. Obviously, this is predicating on your second question regarding White and his possible previous meetings versus JD Martinez, Altuve, Shuck, and Paredes in the Minors and his ability to hold these players and the others down to minimal or no damage in the first 5 innings. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to dig into that a great depth, but the basic information about him is the following;

According to MLB and as indicated by the first round pick with large bonus, White was considered by the Indians to be one of their top pitching prospects.

Vegas and the public are thinking high scoring. As stated above I believe Norris gives the Astros a better shot than Myers and the free swinging minor league guys could care less who is on the mound as they are just happy to be there. Colorado is obviously hitting well and should put up enough runs to win the race.

I actually did look at the minor league history for White and it does appear that he likely wouldn't have come across Houston farm teams in the last two years (Cleveland & Houston AAA & AA teams don't play each other). Of course, I know that some of Houston's roster is from other organizations so can't know for sure. FYI

I'm taking the over again at the Col/Hou game. Norris is a good pitcher but usually only pitches into the 6th inning or so and we all know the bullpen for the Stros is horrible. Inexperienced pitcher for the Rockies as well and games tend to fly over the total in Denver.

It's good dialogue - I was actually leaning Houston before reading this thread and now I love that Houston hasn't seen this kid at all and that the kid is battle tested.

I would have rather picked a team in this situation, but in the last couple of opinions with Felix the outcome change to the negative off a late inning home run or ridiculous error for a 2-3 loss and a 1-2 loss, respectively. Obviously, Tomlin and Felix are extremely solid and should hold this down, but we have seen games working their way over as of late. There are a lot of Under trends that should make this more palatable, Last 12 +/- of 15 games of Hernandez starting have gone under the total of 7.5, Cleveland is (1-7 O/U) when the total is 7 or less, and in Cleveland the Under is 12-3 in the last 15 home games. In addition, these two are coming off a high offensive production double header. Felix has a 2.78 ERA and WHIP of 1.286 when pitching in Cleveland. Tomlin has a 4.26 ERA with a 1.026 WHIP when pitching against Seattle.

Worth Noting: Injuries affecting offensive production; Hafner, Grady Sizemore, Justin Smoak, Jason Kipnis, and Michael Brantley.

*NYY RL ( Cahill / Sabathia )

Cahill in his last three has a 6.27 ERA and WHIP of 1.400 allowing 13 ERs on 22 hits. Against the Yankees (0-2 this season) his ERA is 13.50 and WHIP of 1.928. If he performs like this today it will be very lopsided. Yankees are coming off another bad outing from Colon and will turn it around with Sabathia.

Wandy was put on Waivers yesterday and Colorado indicated interest so the Astros have 48 hours from yesterday to decide his fate. According to the local news, there is a chance he will not pitch in this game for risk of injury. I have to get further confirmation on this later this morning because it really changes the outcome of this opinion for me.

It's good dialogue - I was actually leaning Houston before reading this thread and now I love that Houston hasn't seen this kid at all and that the kid is battle tested.

Sorry for the delayed reply but I regretfully ended up not playing the game at all, I thought too much and convinced myself out of it. I also decided not to play Detroit & KC like I originally wanted to....then I win but one of the 5 games I did play. Over would have been a cash cow as well. Sometimes I overthink!
