Pitchers, weather & umpires: Sat., May 3
    Mariners at Yankees 1:05 PM
Starting Pitchers: Felix Hernandez (2-1, 2.22) vs Mike Mussina (3-3, 4.73)
Possibly the best pitching matchups of the day that is really short on solid pitching matchups. The M’s are 3-3 in King Felix’ six starts this year, and with any bullpen they’d be 5-1 in those games. This will be his fourth game against the Yanks during his career, and second at The Stadium where he was brilliant last Sep 3 with seven innings of one-run ball, the only one of the three career starts against New York that Seattle has won. Robinson Cano and Johnny Damon have given him fits along the way.

The Moose is off a couple of decent outings vs. the Tribe and ChiSox in his last two starts. The last time he faced the Mariners was that Sep 3, 2007, game that Hernandez was solid, with Mussina coming on for nearly four innings in relief of Roger Clemens in that one. That was the only time he saw the M’s in 2007, and his most recent start against them came in 2005 when he faced Seattle twice without very good results though the Yanks won one of those with their bats. In his last 11.2 innings against the Mariners, Mussina has allowed 10 earned runs. Ichiro Suzuki (12-for-32) and Raul Ibañez (10-for-23) have not been fooled too often by Mussina.

Plate Ump: Paul Schrieber will call the balls and strikes for the sixth time this season. He’s 2-3 Home/Vis and 1-4 O/U, going under on all four games with totals of 9½ or less remaining under and the one game above that mark going over. This one has been set at 8½.

Weather: There’s a 20% chance of rain in the Bronx Saturday afternoon with temps just scratching into the mid-to-upper 50s and winds E at 10-20 MPH (from RF corner across to LF corner).

    Pirates at Nationals 1:05 PM
    Starting Pitchers:
    Paul Maholm (2-2, 3.26) vs Matt Chico (0-5, 6.68)
Certainly looks like a pitching mismatch with Maholm off a couple of strong outings and Chico coming off three successive bad starts. Maholm has two career starts against the Nats, one each the last two seasons, and Pittsburgh has managed to lose both of them despite their lefty pitching ok (13.1 IP, 6 ER, 10 K).

Chico has not been the man this season with just one quality start among his six assignments. In his last three he’s worked just 13 innings total while allowing 16 runs, all earned and serving up four gopher balls. However, he has one career start against the Pirates and pitched six scoreless frames in that one. Alas, the Nats found a way to lose the game when the bullpen was wild and let a few late inning walks lead to their demise.

Plate Ump: Behind the plate will be Jim Reynolds who is 4-1 in favor of the home team and 3-1-1 O/U so far in 2008. The total in this one is 9½, and Reynolds hasn’t had an O/U on a game yet with a total of 9½ or higher.

Weather: Cloudy, rain in morning, a 30% chance in afternoon with increased chance of rain as day progresses, muggy temps in the high-70s, low-80s at game time, winds SSE 10-20 (out to left).

White Sox at Blue Jays 1:07 PM
      Starting Pitchers:
      John Danks (2-2, 3.00) vs Jesse Litsch (3-1, 4.85)
Making his sixth start of the season, the ChiSox are 3-2 in Danks’ previous five outings and four of the five have been quality efforts. Over his last three starts, Danks has hurled 21 innings and allowed just two runs, 12 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 16. He faced the Blue Jays once last year, working five one-run innings in Toronto and allowing just a single run. Chicago managed to lose the game, 4-3.

Litsch struggled to last deep into his first four starts of the season but threw 93 pitches in his last assignment while pitching seven frames. This is his first career start against the Pale Hose, with Nick Swisher and Orlando Cabrera the only two hitters with anything on their resume against Litsch.

Plate Ump: Rob Drake was fairly uncommitted to either side of the total in 2007 at 16-18-1 O/U, and he’s 3-3 O/U so far this season in his six plate assignments. However, if there’s one trend he does lean to it’s in favor of the home squad. He’s 28-13 in favor of the hosts over his last 41 games.

Weather: Strong chance of rain on the outside, but dry under the Rogers Centre roof.

        Orioles at Angels 3:45 PM
        Starting Pitchers:
        Daniel Cabrera (2-0, 4.14) vs Jon Garland (3-3, 5.94)
Aside from the control issues, Cabrera isn’t having too bad of a season so far. Baltimore is 5-0-1 in his six outings, the most recent the infamous suspended game in Chicago against the White Sox on Apr 28. His last four starts have seen him chunk 27 innings while giving up just seven runs (all earned) on 20 hits, two of them of the bleacher souvenir variety. Granted, he has had three of his six starts result in him issuing four or more free passes, including seven in 6.1 IP of the Apr 28 contest. Vladimir Guerrero (6-for-16), Chone Figgins (6-16), Maicer Izturis (4-10) and Garret Anderson (4-10, HR) have done well against Cabrera. He faced the Halos twice last year with the O’s losing both games. Cabrera threw 11 innings and allowed 11 earned runs, going 6.2 IP in the start at Anaheim while giving up three earnies.

Garland has struggled this year with just two quality starts in his six assignments. This will be his first game against the O’s in an Angels uniform, but he has a solid track record vs. Baltimore in the past with wins in each of his last four starts to go with a 3.62 ERA and just one home run allowed in over 27 innings. Melvin Mora, Kevin Millar, Brian Roberts and Ramon Hernandez have each batted .353 or better against Garland in 15+ AB over their careers.

Plate Ump: Paul Emmel gave the Over the edge in 2006-07 with a 36-24-2 O/U, but is so far 2-3 O/U in 2008. Over his last 66 games behind the plate, the home team has a 45-21 advantage.

Weather: Highs reaching the mid-70s on Saturday under partly cloudy skies and SSW winds at 5-10 (slightly out to right-center).

          Cubs at Cardinals 3:45 PM
          Starting Pitchers:
          Ted Lilly (1-4, 6.46) vs Kyle Lohse (3-0, 2.36)
After a rough start, Lilly has settled down in his last two starts working 12 innings with just three runs allowed. Chicago is 2-4 in his six starts to date, but they could win their third this time as only Albert Pujols (5-for-16, HR) has really hit Lilly well in the past. The southpaw started five against the Cards a year ago with the Cubs going 3-2 in those games, including 2-0 at St. Louis. In total, Lilly pitched 33 innings in the five starts, lasting at least six in all of them while allowing 13 ER (3.54).

Lohse has only had one bad start in six this year, but the Cardinals are just 3-3 in those games. He’s coming off a 102-pitch game against Houston last Sunday in St. Louis, a game the Redbirds won by a 5-1 count. Several Cubs hitters have pounded Lohse over their careers, including Alfonso Soriano (12-for-28, 2 HR), Mark DeRosa (6-6, HR) and Aramis Ramirez (5-5, HR). Splitting his time in Cincy and Philly last season, he made three starts – though one only lasted one inning due to a minor injury – and threw 15.1 innings while giving up just three earned runs.

Plate Ump: Veteran Tim McClelland is 4-3 O/U and Home-Vis this season so far, and off a 2007 season in which he favored the Under by a 20-13-3 margin. Known for having a bit of a tight zone however in terms of balls and strikes

Weather: Partly cloudy Slight chance of rain, clouds increasing in the afternoon, game time temp in low-to-mid 50s and strong winds at 25-35 from the WNW (in from LF corner to the 1B side).

            Mets at Diamondbacks 3:45 PM
            Starting Pitchers:
            Mike Pelfrey (2-1, 4.43) vs Brandon Webb (6-0, 1.98)
Tough matchup for Pelfrey who has just one start this year in which he pitched past the sixth inning, and that came against a fairly woeful Nats lineup on Apr 15. This is just the second time he’s started against the D-Backs, the other coming in Arizona on May 6, 2007, a game that saw him work 5.1 innings and allow three runs while issuing four walks in a 3-1 New York loss.

Webb is simply on fire with wins in all six of his starting assignments this season, the worst being a six-inning, three-run effort against the Giants on Apr 22. He saw the Mets twice a year ago with mixed results, winning a game with a solid outing in New York and losing one with a poor linescore in Arizona. In those two games, Webb pitched 14 innings and allowed five earned runs, though it should be noted that Shawn Green and Paul Lo Duca, neither of whom is with the Mets now, did most of the damage against Webb in the one bad game.

Plate Ump: Greg Gibson has been evenly split 3-3 O/U in 2008 so far with the totals in his six games all closing in the 8½-10 range. This one sits at 8½.

Weather: Slight chance of rain in Phoenix with afternoon highs reaching about 90, winds S 5-10 (out to center).

              Reds at Braves 7:00 PM
              Starting Pitchers:
              Matt Belisle (1-1, 9.00) vs Jo-Jo Reyes (0-0, 0.00)
Ladies and gentlemen, get those pencils sharpened and your scorecards ready as this one has all the makings for a slugfest in Atlanta Saturday night. This is Belisle’s second start of the season, and despite that fat 9.00 ERA, the Reds managed to win one of the previous two. He hasn’t worked in a week, so maybe the extra rest will serve him well, at least that’s the optimistic way of looking at it. Also possibly in his favor is the last time he faced the Braves was 2006 in two relief outings.

What can you say about Jo-Jo Reyes that hasn’t been said before? No, seriously, what can you say as I’ve got nothing much at all on the guy. This is his 2008 MLB debut after starting five for the Braves’ Triple-A club in Richmond. He did a fair job in those five games with a 1-17 ERA and 25 Ks versus eight walks and no homers in 23 innings. He did face the Reds twice last year, with Atlanta losing both and Reyes tossing nine innings while giving up nine earned (though no homers). Brandon Phillips and Edwin Encarnacion could be the most crucial hitters for him in this one.

Plate Ump: Mark Wegner has leaned slightly to the Under this year (2-4-1 O/U) with totals all over the map in his contests.

Weather: Showers in the morning and possibly severe thunderstorms in the afternoon, though rain odds should taper off by game time. First pitch should be in the mid-to-upper 60s with SSW winds at 10-20 (out to a bit left of center).

Rays at Red Sox 7:05 PM
                Starting Pitchers:
                James Shields (3-1, 2.54) vs Josh Beckett (2-2, 4.10)
Next to the Hernandez-Mussina contest in the Bronx, this might be the second best pitching matchup on the board for Saturday and a rematch of the Shields-Beckett game in Tampa a week ago. Shields tossed a complete game, 2-hit shutout against the Sox in that one, striking out seven and burning just 99 pitches. In his six previous starts this year, five have been against AL East teams and the Rays are 3-2 in those contests with all but one a quality start. Tampa is 4-2 overall in the six starts Shields has made. The recent shutout was the first time in five career starts vs. Boston that Shields and the Rays came away with the win. This will be just his second start at Fenway, and he pitched well (6 IP, 1 ER) in the other.

Beckett actually pitched well enough to win last Sunday when he worked seven innings and allowed just a single earned run while putting 13 Ks on the scorecard. Boston is 2-2 in Beckett’s four start so far this season, with all four of the starts against AL East clubs and both wins coming against the Yankees. Since joining the Red Sox before the ’06 season, Beckett has now made six starts vs. Tampa with the BoSox 3-3 in those outings. Beckett’s had just one bad outing against the Rays, and has been a strikeout machine when facing them. In 38.2 innings vs. Tampa, he’s allowed 16 ER (eight of those in one game) and struck out 51.

Plate Ump: Bill Welke is a perfect 5-0 to the Over this year, including two games with a 10½ total. He was split even, 17-17-1 in 2007 on the O/U, with the biggest difference this year in his games being home runs are up from 1.8 per game in ’07 to 2.8 this season.

Weather: Listing a very good chance of rain all day in Beantown with game time temp in mid-40s and E winds at 5-10 (across the infield from right to left).

                  Royals at Indians 7:05 PM
                  Starting Pitchers:
                  Gil Meche (1-4, 7.22) vs Aaron Laffey (0-1, 6.35)
Struggling to follow up his decent ’07 showing in Kansas City, Meche comes into this one with his Royals just 2-4 in his six assignments this year. That includes taking a butt-whippin’ in KC at the hands of the Tribe on Apr 16, a 15-1 Cleveland win in which Meche worked 3.1 innings and was charged with eight runs, all earned. He made three starts against the Indians a season ago with 17 IP and eight earned runs allowed while the Royals won two of the three. His lone 2007 start in Cleveland saw him work five and allow four. Casey Blake and Jhonny Peralta are undoubtedly drooling at the prospect of facing Meche with the two a combined 21-for-41 (.512) with three dongs.

This is Laffey’s second start of the season, the other coming in a 5-2 loss at home against the Yankees on Monday. Laffey tossed 5.2 innings and only gave up three hits, but a pair of hit batsmen and a walk, plus an infield single after he had been lifted, contributed heavily to the four runs that he was charged with. The lefty made three starts against KC a year ago with Cleveland winning two of them. The one they lost was at home in Jacobs Field. Overall he worked 17.1 innings while giving up seven earned runs to the Royals in 2007. Nobody in this lineup has taken him deep on the major league level.

                  Plate Ump: Not posted.

Weather: Might be tough to get this one in again, though TWC is showing a decreased chance of rain after the sun sets. Game time temp in low-50s, low-60s, winds WSW 10-20 (out to right).

                    Brewers at Astros 7:05 PM
                    Starting Pitchers:
                    Manny Parra (1-1, 4.94) vs Brandon Backe (1-3, 4.65)
Parra is making his sixth start of the season and has yet to work through the sixth inning in the previous five, failing to work more than four in two of them. The Brewers are 3-2 in those outings, however, and he is starting to show signs of keeping the ball down a bit better. This will be his first time to face the Astros, which is generally a bad thing for the Astros, and Kaz Matsui is the only hitter who has seen Parra before, striking out in his only AB.

Backe has only been effective in two of his six starts, and that shows in Houston’s 2-4 record in his outings this year. He only faced the Brewers once in 2007, a season in which he only made five starts coming back from elbow surgery. Backe took the loss in that ’07 start, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing four runs, three of them earned. Corey Hart, Ryan Braun and Jason Kendall will be three key hitters for Backe, with Ryan Braun.

Plate Ump: The total is set at 10 with Jerry Layne behind the plate. He’s been very strong to the Under this year (6-1 in his seven games), with less than a home run per game when he calls pitches and starting pitchers keeping the scoring way down while they’re in.

Weather: Typical spring weather for Houston with 20% chance of rain, temps in upper-70s to start the game and NNE wind at 5-10 (in from right-center). If rain is factor, the roof can be closed.

                      Giants at Phillies 7:05 PM
                      Starting Pitchers:
                      Matt Cain (1-2, 4.41) vs Brett Myers (2-2, 5.11)
Since a disastrous start in St. Louis on Apr 18, Cain has settled down a bit with just one run allowed in his last two starts covering 12.1 innings (both San Francisco wins). Chase Utley has two homers and a .444 average in nine at bats vs. the Giants right-hander, and the Phils rocked him for seven runs in three innings in his only start against them in 2007 (game was in SF).

Philadelphia is 3-3 in Myers’ six starts this year, and he has surrendered 10 runs (all earned) in his last two starts over 12 innings. He has pitched well against the hitters in the Giants lineup, and the only two times he saw them in 2007, he came on as the closer in each game to chunk a scoreless frame and pick up the save.

Plate Ump: Expect a lot of squawking from the hitters, pitchers and dugouts tonight with Angel Hernandez and his shifting strike zone behind the plate. The home team is a perfect 6-0 in his 2008 plate assignments with a 2-4 O/U record.

Weather: Chance of rain increases as night wears on. Game time temp should be low-60s, winds ENE 10-20 (across from RF corner to the LF line).

                        Tigers at Twins 7:10 PM
                        Starting Pitchers:
                        Justin Verlander (1-4, 6.50) vs Scott Baker (2-0, 4.50)
Verlander has made one solid start in six and that is reflected in Detroit’s 1-5 record in his six games in 2008. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau have not been fooled by the Tigers righty over their careers, combining for a .448 average (13-for-29) and three home runs. The Twins beat him badly twice in 2007, with both of those starts in Detroit, but his lone career start at the Metrodome was a good one as he pitched the Tigers to a 7-2 win with seven good innings back in Sep 2006.

Minnesota is 4-1 in Baker’s five starts this year, though he is coming off a rough outing in his last go when he allowed five earned and 4.1 innings at Texas (Twins won, 12-6). He faced the Tigers in Detroit on Apr 15, tossing seven innings and giving up just three runs. All three runs scored on solo shots by Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordoñez and Carlos Guillen. Baker got a no-decision in that 5-3 Twins defeat when Miguel Cabrera took reliever Jesse Crain deep for a 2-run blast in the eighth.

Plate Ump: Paul Nauert has favored the visitors and the Over both by 4-2 margins in 2008 so far. He was also an Over ump in 2007 (19-13-3). He’s called three games with a total set at 9, as this game shows presently, and two of the three finished over.

                        Weather: Indoors.

                          Padres at Marlins 7:10 PM
                          Starting Pitchers:
                          Jake Peavy (3-1, 2.09) vs Ricky Nolasco (1-2, 5.13)
Despite only allowing six runs in his last three starts (21 innings), the Padres have dropped all three games. He made two starts against the Fish in 2007, with San Diego 1-1 in those games. Peavy worked seven innings in both games and allowed four runs total (three earned), striking out 16 and walking none. Luis Gonzalez has hit him pretty well over their careers, batting .340 in 61 total plate appearances, knocking four out of the park and driving in 12.

Florida is 2-2 in Nolasco’s four starts, and he’s pitched fairly well the last two outings covering 11 innings (3.27 ERA, no homers). This is just his second career start against the Pads, the other coming in June 2006 at Petco in San Diego when he worked six innings and allowed three runs to take a 3-2 loss in the game. Mike Cameron, no longer with the Padres, had a big two-run clout in that contest.

Plate Ump: Calling the pitches will be Bruce Dreckman who is 1-4 O/U in his five games and almost half of the scoring in his games occurring from the seventh inning on to this point in the season

Weather: Should be a pleasant evening under partly cloudy skies, mid-70s at first pitch and ESE winds 10-15.

                            Dodgers at Rockies 8:05 PM
                            Starting Pitchers:
Esteban Loaiza (1-2, 4.15) vs Jorge De La Rosa (0-0, 0.00)
Loaiza has bounced between the rotation and the pen for Los Angeles this season, with this his third start to go with four relief outings. He saw the Rocks for one start in his abbreviated 2007 season, working 3.2 innings in LA while giving up three runs that all scored on a pair of long balls. Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe hit the home runs with Todd Helton 8-for-13 (.615) lifetime against Loaiza.

Colorado picked up De La Rosa earlier this week from Kansas City for the old Player To Be Named Later. The Rockies also got cash in the deal to help pay the left-hander’s contract the rest of the season. He’s just a fill-in while they give young southpaw Franklin Morales some time to get his act together down on the farm. He’s had very limited experience against the Dodgers hitters he will face tonight.

Plate Ump: Brian Knight is 2-4 O/U in his first six plate assignments for 2008 despite having a fairly tight zone. He’s worked one game at Coors Field this season (Apr 5) with the total set at 8 and the game just inching over in a 7-2 Arizona win behind their ace Brandon Webb. This total has been placed at 10½, however.

Weather: It’s going to be chilly in the Mile High City with a first pitch temp in the low-50s, upper-40s, and dropping as the sun does the same. South winds at 5-10 (blowing out to center) under partly cloudy skies.

                              Rangers at Athletics 9:05 PM
                              Starting Pitchers:
                              A.J. Murray (0-0, 0.00) vs Chad Gaudin (3-1, 3.00)
Murray is making his 2008 debut for the Rangers after making six starts for their Triple-A club in Oklahoma. He averaged less than five innings in those six starts and will be on a pitch limit of around 70 in this one, meaning the Rangers will be leaning heavy on their bullpen (Yikes!). He faced the A’s three times out of the bullpen in 2007, going 1-1 in the three games while tossing 6.1 innings and allowing five earned runs (three solo homers).

Gaudin has been pitching very well of late, and really only had the one bad start in his first go back on April 8. Over his last three outings, he’s tossed 20 innings and allowed just two earned runs (four total) while whiffing 16, walking just three and allowing but a single tater. He has had some trouble with the Rangers, however, and is no doubt happy to see 3B Hank Blalock in the DL, with Blalock 7-for-8 with four extra base hits lifetime vs. Gaudin. He made six starts vs. Texas in ’07 with the A’s 2-4 in those games. In those six outings, his ERA was 5.94; in the three starts he made in Oakland, his ERA was 3.85 (18.2 IP).

Plate Ump: Jim Joyce has a 5-1 Home/Vis record and a 1-5 O/U mark so far in 2008, with starters allowing more runs in his games than relievers. He was pretty even in 2007 with a 17-17 Home/Vis mark and 18-16 O/U record.

Weather: Will cool off to the mid-50s around game time with a 20% chance of rain and WSW winds at 10-15 (out towards right).

Yes. Wish I had time to do it each and every day, but too much other stuff to do at work.
