I met the boss at Freehold Raceway when one of his trotters was racing in the Dexter Cup. He was signing a few autographs and taking great humor in a few hecklers who were anti-Yankees...... but he was quite good with the public.

He made baseball what it is today, like it or hate it.

Although I live in a city where a small-market team plays (the Pirates)... It's a sad day for baseball.

I'm sure this is all we will here about during the all-star game now. Two Yankees greats dead within a week of each other.

via darren rovell's twitter: Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in '73 for $8.7M. Remarkable.

Hated the man, hate the Yankees, but he did one hell of a job at buying his team wins. No other owner has been accused of buying wins, and that is probably the best thing an owner could hear.

On MLB radio network, they had Billy martin JR on. He told a great story that explained both the perfection that George expected from his employees true heart that Steinbrenner had.

There was a woman who worked in the cafeteria in the Yankee offices in the bronx. Every day George ordered a sandwich with Mayo on it. The 1st day he got one with mustard, he let it go. The next day, when he got one with mustard again, he fired the lady for incompetence.

Another employee approached Mr Steinbrenner and explained to him that the woman was a grandmother who was raising her grandson by herself. She was retired but when her grandson wanted to go to college, she went back to work in the yankee offices just so he could have money for college.

George got a hold of the grandson and confirmed that the story was true. His grandmother only went back to work to help him afford college. George not wanting to deny the young man an education, told the young man: " I never want to deny you the chance of bettering yourself. I want to see you finish college too"

The Grandson was surprised to hear this and he was relieved and asked George " does that mean you are hiring my grandma back"

To which George replied " No son, I am not hiring your grandma back , She sucks as a worker. I am going to pay for your college because you deserve the chance that your grandmother wants you to have.

As much as he is hated around the country for just outspending everyone and ruining competitive balance as we know it. I know that he was a very giving man also. every year during the jimmy fund telethon here in Boston, Mr Steinbrenner always made a $100k donation to the jimmy fund. When asked why he was so generous to the main redsox charity, he always said " as much as I hate the redsox, you can't hate a kid with Cancer, even one who roots for the redsox" Those are great words from a man w/perspective.

Hate the Steinbrenners, and the Yankees, more for their role in what baseball has become.

I want to see you finish college too" The Grandson was surprised to hear this and he was relieved and asked George " does that mean you are hiring my grandma back" To which George replied " No son, I am not hiring your grandma back , She sucks as a worker. I am going to pay for your college because you deserve the chance that your grandmother wants you to have. ________________________________________ ____________ As much as he is hated around the country for just outspending everyone and ruining competitive balance as we know it.
Great story, thanks for relaying that for guys like me who would have never heard it. RIP George
