MLB odds Give Mets Edge to Complete Sweep of Detroit Tigers

The hard-charging Mets are cashing baseball betting slips at a 15-4 rate in June. New York goes for its third sweep in four series against the Tigers tonight.

Though the boxscores haven't been nearly as pretty since his near-perfect game on June 2, the winning results have been the same for Detroit's Armando Galarraga. The Tigers right-hander will look to keep his club from being swept when the Motown Cats close out a three-game set Thursday at the Mets.

After hammering Justin Verlander on the way to a 14-6 win on Tuesday, New York won Game 2 Wednesday evening 5-0 behind the baffling knuckleball of pitcher R.A. Dickey. The Mets were small home favorites with the win pulling them to within a half-game of the Braves for the lead in baseball's NL East Division.

Baseball betting prices for this one have the Mets slight home favorites in the 120-125 range with Galarraga and the Tigers available for plus 110-115. The total is set at eight-flat with the 'over' chalked up at minus 115 or higher.

All three starts since his famous one-hitter have ended with Galarraga (5-1, 3.32) not factoring into the decision. Still, the Tigers have won all three, once as a small dog and twice with him as a decided favorite in the 190-205 chalk range.

His most recent trip to the mound listed Galarraga as 205 home chalk to the Diamondbacks. The Tigers staked Galarraga to an early 4-0 advantage that he wasn't able to hold, leaving the game in the top of the fifth when Arizona took a 5-4 lead. Detroit reclaimed the lead thanks to Brandon Inge's triple in the eighth that helped the Tigers to the eventual 7-5 triumph.

Galarraga's stats since June 2 include 17 innings pitched, eight earned runs allowed and a gopher ball in each of the three starts.

Opposing Galarraga and the Tigers will be Hisanori Takahashi (4-2, 3.13) who will also be making his seventh start of the season. Takahashi started the year out of the New York bullpen before making his first start on May 21 against the Yankees.

The Tokyo native has two very ugly outings and four very strong starts on his ledger. The two losses, including an 18-6 beating in San Diego, saw Takahashi surrender 11 earned runs in 9 1/3 innings. His four quality starts combine for 25 innings and just one earned run. The Mets have won all three of his June starts for nearly four units of profit. The most recent was June 18 in the Bronx when Takahashi won 4-0 as a 185 underdog to Javier Vazquez and the Yanks.

Alfonso Marquez makes his 16th appearance behind the dish this season. Home squads are 10-5 with home favorites in the 100 to minus 140 range a perfect 4-0. The 'over' is 9-6 with four of his last five plate assignments crossing above the closing total. This will be his first look at both the Tigers and Mets in 2010.
There is a 40 percent chance of rain in Queens on Thursday, though the odds decrease towards the evening hours. Expect warm and muggy conditions with WSW winds around 20 mph (3B out to RF).

The Mets will remain on their home diamond for a weekend series against the Twins that includes Johan Santana (7-8, 3.31) facing his former Minnesota mates on Saturday. Detroit continues its road trip this weekend in Atlanta.

NOTE: The W-L records shown for starting pitchers are their team's W-L mark when they started games in the 2010 season. Statistical sources for this article were Retrosheet.org, Baseball-Reference.com, ESPN.com and, of course, S-BEE-R-dot-com!
