Lincoln was a #4 overall draft pick a few years back, but he had to overcome Tommy John surgery early on, to finally work his way back into the major leagues. He's nowhere near the Pitcher that Strasberg is, but represents part of the core of the youth movement that began with McCutchen last year.
Tabata, I think was leading all levels of baseball this year in Steals with 25, and will give the Pirates the fastest outfield in the majors. He was part of the deal where the Pirates fleeced the yankees two years back for xavier nady and damaso marte.
Pirates should be seeing #1 overall draftee from 2008, Pedro Alvarez coming up in the next month.

When will these kids get traded? 3 or 4 years? Pirates are the biggest joke in professional sports.

well they have them under control until after 2016, so at the worst you wouldn't see them traded until mid 2014 or 2015..... but the hope is that, if enough of these current prospects coming in the next 2 years pans out, that they will finally be competitive...

Church has great #'s off of Lannan so we might see him instead of Milledge or Tabata, depending upon what time he arrived in DC

damn arch.......if 5 of the 30 pitchers they took the last couple years in the draft pan out (the guy they took second round throws close to 100mph also) they might hang in some ball games in the future and make a run in a few years

lol.......laugh now, but at least they are putting huge money into not only signing the prospects, but also into scouting & looking into them all over the world. I GIVE THE NEW GUYS ALL THE CREDIT IN THE WORLD AND THEY WILL COMPETE IN THE FUTURE.......

2 run homer off lincoln in the first....welcome to the majors.....
developing from within and having everything go right, in a 4-6 year period is about the only way small market teams can compete

disagree, if you own a professional sports franchise then you are obviously a billionaire and therefore should go spend an extra 20-30 million on some good players or resign your kids instead of trading them. you could have an all star team of kids pirates traded away. aramis ramirez, oliver perez (was good as a bucco), jason bay, mcclouth, xavier nady, i could go all day.
i hate the small market "woe is me" crap. if the owner doesn't want to spend money then he should sell to someone who will.

problem is that with all those names you mentioned..... that there was no way for them to be there all at the same time....
and have you looked at any of their stats lately? they all suck...
just because guys have big names and big contracts, doesn't mean they are worth 15 million that they have coming...
if you had an outfield of bay, mcclouth, and nady right now.... as a major league team, you'd be in dead last place for sure

bay had a rough two months. what about the last 5-6 years of his, all star caliber every year weren't they? yeah nady peaked a few years ago as a bucco, but I am just pointing out that every time they have a player worth a damn, they trade him away. wasn't jose bautista a bucco a few years back also?
pirates have a top 7 ballpark in the MLB, if they spent money and put a competitive product on the field and were contenders they would get a lot of the money back on ticket sales, concessions, merchandise, parking, higher tv ratings, etc.
bottom line is the majority of these owners are in it to turn a profit and not do what is in the best interests of the customers (paying fans).

I hate the pirate owners, this is just one of their many investments and business pursuits, and they make tons of money without having to field a contender...
that being said, I think the GM and staff have done a great job the last few years of getting rid of the dead weight before they paid them 10-15 million right when they were beginning to fall off...
no reason to pay guys like Nady and Bay, when you have up and coming stars like McCutchen and Jones who can out perform them for 400k a year... and have a higher ceiling...
if you look at all the trades from last year, show me which players are producing now? they've all sucked and/or been hurt
and by the way Oliver Perez with the pirates? was one of the worst pitchers in the league his last few years there and a cancer in the locker room.... major headcase

So in five years when McCutchen wants to sign for 12 million a year, is the mindset going to be hey we have a first round pick we can plug in for 400k a year so forget it?

unfortunately, that could be likely...... best case scenario is that the Pirates are able to lock him up to a multi-year deal when he first becomes arbitration eligible and then have him through 2018-2020.... but most players wanna test the waters regardless.
My sincere hope is that this young crop of guys in Cutch, Alvarez, Tabata, Hernandez, Sanchez, Walker, Jones, D'arnaud, Marte can win in 2014 or 2015
because I don't see THIS current evil ownership changing their small market approach.... and to be honest, they aren't all that rich....
the best way for small market teams to try to compete for a small window, is draft and develop and go after the Cuba defectors and other 16 year old hispanic prospects. rather than waste 4+ million on rent-a-player has beens

decent debut by Tabata, tweaked his hammy though....
not so impressive by Lincoln on the mound statistically, by I was encouraged by his stuff, and was shocked to actually see a pirate pitcher throwing inside a little bit...
he had 2 hits, not too shabby display of wood for a rookie pitcher
