Here is a good example why just looking at the stat sheet will not work all of the time

Baltimore's Starting pitcher for Saturday has 2.76 Era 1.07 whip last 5 games which is actually very good. but hidden behind these stats is a very interesting fact ....after last Sunday's game, his 2010 first inning ERA jumped to 6.54.

This does not mean this is a play but very well could be
