MLB Betting: Yankees, Tigers Open Series in Motown
Sergio Mitre will step into the Yankees rotation on Monday night in place of Andy Pettitte as New York begins a four-game series at Comerica Park against the Tigers.
When ESPN decided to make the Yankees, Tigers game from Comerica Park its Monday night prime time contest, the network was probably not expecting to get Sergio Mitre as the New York starter. But that's what we're looking at to get the sixth week of the 2010 season started when Mitre and the Yanks take on Dontrelle Willis and Detroit.

Despite the switch on the mound for New York, the Yanks are still the favorite in the 120-125 range with the total set at 10.
Detroit comes home after a 1-4 road trip. The Tigers are 17-14 and up about 2.5 units after losing Sunday in Cleveland, 7-4. The 'over' nine in that one left the Motown Cats 16-14-1 to the 'under.' The Tigers will be looking to improve upon their 9-3 home record in 2010.
New York couldn't finish a sweep of the Red Sox in Boston, but comes into this series with a 21-9 record to sit just a half-game behind the Rays in the AL East. The Yankees are up nearly 8.8 units on the season and have been helping 'over' bettors at an 18-11-1 clip.
Mitre (0-0, 2.79) will be filling in for Andy Pettitte who is being skipped to rest his 38-year-old left elbow. It's Mitre's first start since Sept. 2009, and his first appearance ever against the Tigers.
The right-hander made nine starts for the Yankees in 2009, with New York winning five. The team's MLB.com site suggest Mitre will be limited to 65-75 pitches, meaning Yankees relievers could be called on early. New York's bullpen worked 10 innings at Fenway over the weekend, including 4 1/3 in Saturday's rain-interrupted match and the 3 2/3 last night by Romulo Sanchez. That long relief effort from Sanchez gave the rest of the New York pen a night off.
Willis (3-2, 3.99) is coming off consecutive starts against the Twins, with Detroit 1-1 in those contests. The D-Train worked six scoreless on the home mound versus Minnesota on April 29 in a 3-0 Tigers triumph. He earned a no-decision five days later on the road at Target Field, an eventual 4-3 Twins victory. Willis struck out six in both starts, walking five in the two games combined, and hasn't allowed a home run since serving up two to the Royals on April 13.
The southpaw will be facing the Yankees for just the second time in his career. His only other trip to the mound against them was in June 2006 when he dropped a 2-1 decision at Yankee Stadium while pitching for the Marlins.
Detroit won the first meeting between the two teams in 2009, with Justin Verlander winning a duel with C.C. Sabathia at Comerica. After that it was all Yankees in the following five games. New York finished up about 3.8 units in the six encounters, with the 'under' 4-2. Both 'overs' came in Detroit.
A cool and possibly wet day awaits Motown to start the week. Afternoon highs are only expected to reach the upper-50s with clouds increasing as game time approaches. There is a 60 percent chance of rain as the evening progresses, with a first-pitch temp around 50ºF. Nighttime winds are forecast from the ESE at 12-18 mph (in from LF to the 1B dugout).
The four-game series continues Tuesday when Javier Vazquez (1-4, 9.78) gets the ball for New York. Rick Porcello (2-4, 7.50) is slated for Detroit.
NOTE: The W-L records shown for starting pitchers are their team's W-L mark when they started games in the 2010 season. Statistical sources for this article were Retrosheet.org, Baseball-Reference.com, ESPN.com and, of course, S-BEE-R-dot-com!
