MLB Betting Preview: San Diego Padres at Florida Marlins
A couple of big right-handers go at it Monday evening at Sun Life Stadium when Josh Johnson and the Florida Marlins host Mat Latos and the San Diego Padres.
A couple of teams hanging at or near the top spot of their divisions as April draws to a close meet up in Miami on Monday when the Padres visit the Marlins.

Monday's series opener will pit Mat Latos (2-1, 3.57) on the hill for the Padres against Florida's Josh Johnson (2-2, 4.09). The very early lines released Sunday afternoon listed the Marlins as 150-155 favorites and set the total for this one at eight.
San Diego saw its eight-game winning streak snapped in Cincinnati on Sunday, 5-4. That contest was basically a pick 'em offshore and laded squarely on the nine-run total. The loss dropped San Diego to 11-7, but still showing a nice 5.2 units in the black.
Latos, the youngest arm in Bud Black's rotation, will be making his fourth start of the season and just the 14th in his young career. He's coming off a solid performance last week at home versus San Francisco. Latos worked seven scoreless frames of a 1-0 win over the Giants. He's given up four homers this season in a little less than 18 innings, but three of those came in Latos' season debut at Coors Field.
His lone experience against the Marlins came last Aug. 30 here in Miami. The Marlins touched him for five runs, four earned, chasing the right-hander out of Coconut Creek, FL, just an out into the fourth inning. Florida won the game, 6-4.
Florida also enters off a loss, dropping an 8-4 decision at Colorado on Sunday as a 145 underdog. The final went 'over the 9 ½ when the Rockies plated four in the decisive fifth inning. The loss left the Marlins 10-9 and a little more than half a buck on the good side.
Johnson has struggled a bit in the early going, if you can call a 4.09 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 22 innings struggling. Florida is 2-2 in his four mound assignments, but could easily be 3-1. Johnson left his start last Wednesday with the lead in Houston only to see Fish relievers cough it up and drop the game to the Astros, 5-4.
It has been a while since the 6-foot-seven, former fourth-round picks faced the Padres. Johnson came away with a no-decision in a 1-0 loss in San Diego back on July 4, 2007. That was his final appearance on the mound until July 2008 as he recovered from Tommy John surgery.
Florida won four of the six head-to-head meetings a year ago, sweeping the Padres in San Diego but managing just one win in three tries in Miami. Florida holds an 11-8 edge the last three seasons, but again have a losing record at home since 2007 at 4-5.
There's a 60 percent chance of rain in the Miami area on Monday, though current forecasts call for the chances lessening after nightfall. Should be a humid evening at the least, with temps in the upper-70s for first pitch. Winds are listed to be out of the WSW at 10-15 mph (out to left-center).
The series will continue on Tuesday with Jon Garland (2-2, 2.86) on the mound for San Diego against Anibal Sanchez (2-1, 4.82). Florida has yet to name its starter for Wednesday's series finale. Kevin Correia (3-1, 3.13) is scheduled for the Pads.
NOTE: The W-L records shown for starting pitchers are their team's W-L mark when they started games in the 2010 season. Statistical sources for this article were Retrosheet.org, Baseball-Reference.com, ESPN.com and, of course, S-BEE-R-dot-com!
