Didn't live through his era, but I gotta go with Fidrych. Saw a lot of his highlights and antics on the mound after he passed, awesome stuff. Also I gotta give Rollie Fingers and Catfish Hunter some consideration here.

Wow, can't argue with any of the names mentioned already. Huge Nolan Ryan fan; dude was and still is a legend in the minds of all baseball fans here in the Lone Star State. Ol' Diz and Satchel were two that came to mind immediately in terms of 'cool,' and The Bird was a breath of fresh air may he rest in peace.

I'll throw a couple of less-heralded names out for the list. First, what made Don Nottebart so cool in my mind is I played catch with him when I was a kid and was growing up in Little League/school with his kids. Plus I was on hand for his no-hitter back in 1963 and still have one of the balls he warmed up with that night (courtesy of the late-great Pete Runnels).

And Larry Andersen is one funny dude and was one helluva' reliever in his day.

A few more old Houston pitchers that I also want to toss in are Jim Deshaies, Charlie Kerfeld and Joaquin Andujar.

i'll also second or third the idea that Satchel Paige was the first guy that came to mind.

more mythical and legendary stories about that guy than any other pitcher or baseball player period maybe.

I was always a fan of miserably obese baseball players. The two pitchers who immediately come to mind are Rich Garces and Rick Reuschel. Here's a pic of El Guapo:

Dock Ellis Pitched a No-Hitter while tripping on Acid, AND perhaps Ellis’ most startling act occurred on May 1, 1974, when he tied a major league record by hitting three batters in a row. In spring training that year, Ellis sensed the Pirates had lost the aggressiveness that drove them to three straight division titles from 1970 to 1972. Furthermore, the team now seemed intimidated by Cincinnati’s "Big Red Machine." "Cincinnati will bullshit with us and kick our ass and laugh at us," Ellis said. "They’re the only team that talk about us like a dog." Ellis single-handedly decided to break the Pirates out of their emotional slump, announcing that "We gonna get down. We gonna do the do. I’m going to hit these mother****ers." True to his word, in the first inning of the first regular-season game he pitched against the Reds, Ellis hit leadoff batter Pete Rose in the ribs, then plunked Joe Morgan in the kidney, and loaded the bases by hitting Dan Driessen in the back. Tony Perez, batting cleanup, dodged a succession of Ellis’ pitches to walk and force in a run. The next hitter was Johnny Bench. "I tried to deck him twice," Ellis recalled. "I threw at his jaw, and he moved. I threw at the back of his head, and he moved." At this point, Pittsburgh manager Danny Murtaugh removed Ellis from the game. But his strategy worked: the Pirates snapped out of their lethargy to win a division title in 1974, while the Reds failed to win their division for the first time in three years.

What a season, huh? The second-best trade the Astros ever made was getting Scotty from the Mets for Danny Heep. Larry Andersen was traded for Bagwell, which is no doubt the greatest trade the club ever made.

                                                    Don Drysdale-Bob Gibson-Sal Maglie
See, these were pitchers from the "old days" when a batter didn't spend time digging his spikes into the batters box trying to get a piece of the outside pitch. These were the days when they wouldn't step out of the box and come back in and adjust their batting glove after every pitch. These were the days when a hitter expected to get brushed back after hitting a HR last at bat.
These were the pitchers, A great one(Gibson) A very, very good one (Drysdale) and a good one(Maglie). What makes them cool is that they were not afraid to put one under a batters chin at any given time. As a matter of fact, it was expected. Drysdale, at 6' 6" was a master at this. Maglie's nickname was
The Barber"................that doesn't come from his off season job, either. It was because he wasn't afraid to givea batter a close shave from one of his pitches. and everyone that knows baseball knows that you didn't mess with Gibson.............at all.
