The Rangers played a game for the ages at Baltimore last night, scoring 30 runs in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Most of the damage came vs. the beleaguered Orioles bullpen though, and their insane output has actually served to inflate this total tonight. Look for Weaver and the Seattle pen to quiet Texas tonight, keying an Under.
The Texas Rangers set a modern day Major League Baseball record by scoring 30 runs in the first game of a doubleheader with the Baltimore Orioles last night, and then proceeded to score nine more runs in the nightcap.
Now, does this have a bearing on tonight’s matchup back at home against the Seattle Mariners? Well id does, but not in the way you might think. While one school of thought is that the Texas bats will continue their onslaught tonight, our take is that scoring 39 runs on Wednesday has served to artificially inflate this total to its current number of 11.
After all, do not forget that the Rangers did most of their damage vs. the horrible Orioles bullpen last night. Well, they are now facing a Seattle bullpen that ranks fifth in the American League with a 3.70 pen ERA, so Texas is not expected to be as successful offensively late in the game. Also consider that prior to the Baltimore series, in which the first game Pushed the total and both games last night obviously went Over, the Under had gone a perfect 8-0 in the previous eight Rangers games!
Texas must also contend with Mariners starter Jeff Weaver here, who has rounded to form very nicely after a horrible start this year. Weaver has a stellar 2.78 ERA and a microscopic 0.97 WHIP in his last three starts, and he has now allowed one earned run or less in five of his last 10 starts.
Now, Kameron Loe has been inconsistent for the Rangers, although he is coming off of a nice outing where he tossed five scoreless innings while allowing just three hits in Minnesota. Perhaps most importantly, he may have Seattle’s number, as he has allowed three earned runs or less in three of his four career starts against them.
Finally, do not forget about the Texas bullpen, which ranks third in the American League in pen ERA at an excellent 3.47.
Free Pick: Mariners, Rangers Under 11 (-110)
