Tough day Saturday, but when it’s the first losing day in over two weeks, it’s a little easier to swallow. And if the M’s can get a win tonight it actually won’t be that bad a day. I did hit my 9th pick in a row on Wagerline and won a free hat, so I guess that’s something. I’m taking it pretty easy Sunday, just a couple home dogs with huge bullpen advantages.
Twins +105 (Boof/Haren) - I highly suspect a better line will be available tomorrow, but I won’t be, at least not until after the first pitch. A LOT of people will be on the A’s in this game.
Dan Haren’s been great. He deserved to start the All-Star Game, and it was a great moment for him, so that was good. If the season ended today, he’d probably win the Cy Young, and I’m fine with that. But he’s been faltering a little. He’s given up three or more runs in five consecutive starts, and his ERA has increased from 1.58 to 2.30 and his WHIP has increased from under 0.9 to 1.00. Terrible, I know, I‘m sure the A‘s will be sending him to the minors any day now.
But this play isn’t nearly as much a fade of him as it is a fade of the A’s as a road favorite. They are playing like total fools right now. They managed three total hits today in a game started by Carlos Silva. Who’s to say they do more against the Boofster? Boof’s been up and down lately, but with the way the A’s offense is struggling, this is a play at plus odds.
Mariners +130 (Weaver/Verlander)
On May 10th, Jeff Weaver had started six games. In each of those games, he got the loss and had an ERA above 9.00. So, he takes a month off, and re-emerges as the best pitcher on the Mariners staff. I don‘t know how, but in his six starts since June 9, he has pitched 37.2 innings, allowed only 33 hits, 8 BB, and 1 HR, and given up seven total ER. That’s a 1.67 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.
Verlander is solid, but since his no-hitter he’s been very average. He’s gone 25 innings and given up 21 hits, 9 BB, and 12 ER. That’s a 4.32 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. I’m not saying Weaver is the better pitcher, but he has been a streaky pitcher, and I plan on continuing to ride him while he’s pitching well. With the current form of both pitchers and the Mariners having the superior bullpen, I’ll take them as a home pup all day long.
Both for medium-sized amounts. I think both are good plays, above average plays, but nothing special. Good luck everyone.
