I don't know what his secret is, but Leyland sure is doing one hell of a job.

That sounds about right. Dusty has really derailed the Cubs over the past couple of years. Some of his pitching moves alone make you wanna scratch your head.

i think your being generous giving him that much credit.
i don't think dusty had what it took too push the right buttons like Leyland did to make detroit even a .500 type team.
i think Leyland learned from his mistakes he made while he was in Colorado.

You must be kidding me with Scoscia and Cox. Two of the managers that scare me the most with their in-game management of a team. Some guys who deserve some credit are Randolph, Macha, and Garner, imho.

I agree with you about Macha and Garner.
Randolph I think has had too much talent given to him.
Sciocia is an aggresive manager, I like that. But I could still be hung up be thinking of the Angels of '02.
Cox is a different story. I think he's one of the best managers in the game and gets far less credit than he deserves. Of course the Braves underachieved some years but I dont think you can blame him.
He's continued to win (this year aside) getting his payroll cut and loosing star players almost every year. (Maddux, Glavine, Sheffield, Lopez, etc.)

I'll vote for Ned Yost. Working with a bunch of nobody's (except for Carlos Lee who will be traded this month) without a true star pitcher and still doing well.

Cox is probably better than I want to admit, and I agree about Bochy being underrated.
But I'm not sure there's really one single 'best manager' in the game. Leyland's done a great job, no doubt about it. But I also think it's easy to get our panties wet over his sharp turnaround of a club that has been managed better in the front office the last few years and has been building some good talent that was in the system long before Leyland came aboard.
Leyland might be the best manager for the Tigers right now, and I'll include him on my short list of who I feel are the best today. But to just hand him the title 80-odd games into his first season back, I'll stop short there.
Garner, as much as I liked him as a player from the time he was with the Pirates and I first started to watch him, might be the best manager for the Astros, but he's proven he wasn't the best manager in other situations.
I do agree with ranking Duh-sty last on the current list, with Jim Tracy 29th. However, both of them would immediately move up one rung if some team was to bring back Jimy '1M' Williams or Terry "Destroyer of Bullpens' Collins who, ironically, always gave credit for his managerial style to Leyland.

Just to add a little to the not so fast stakes lets remember Leyland fell short big time in the early 90's when his Pirates where pounded year in and year out by Cox's Braves.
Not a bad team either (Bonds, Van Slyke, Bonilla, Drabek, Belinda)... Francisco Cabrera... just kidding.

I'll second this. Milwaukee has been god-awful. I think it is an absolute miracle that the Brewers are near .500. Yost deserves a lot of credit for keeping that ship somewhat together.
In April, I thought this team had a great shot to win the NL Central. Considering how this team has performed on the field, I think Yost has kept them within shouting distance. As I have commented before, I think the NL Central is absolutely awful. The Brewers still have time to right the ship because the teams in front of them are marginal at best.

now that mazzoni's out of atlanta. you have to ask yourself was he all that great.
it's sure looking like maybe mazzoni was the brains behind the braves success for all those years. just for the fact that he knew how to press the right buttons on that braves staff all those years.

Leyland is a good manager for a veteran team, like the Tigers are. He never did anything with the young teams he was managing.
