How Plus500 event contracts work

Plus500 event contracts work by turning a real-world question into a simple Yes-or-No trade. You buy "Yes" if you think something will happen, and "No" if you don’t. The price you pay reflects how likely the market thinks an outcome is, sometimes presented as a percentage. 

Yes/No pricing in cents

Each contract trades somewhere between $0.01 and $0.99, and that price doubles as an implied probability. If a "Yes" is going for $0.39, the market is effectively pricing the outcome at about 39%. As new information comes in and traders react, that price drifts up or down, so a contract you bought at $0.39 might climb to $0.55 if the market sentiment shifts your way.

Settlement math

At settlement, every contract resolves to either $1 or $0. If your prediction is correct, each contract pays out $1. If it’s wrong, it settles at $0, and you lose what you’ve paid. Say you buy 100 "Yes" contracts at $0.39, paying a total of $39. If the event settles "Yes", you collect $1 for each contract, for a total profit of $61 (before any fees). If it settles No, you’re out the $39 you put in. Your maximum gain and maximum loss are both known the moment you enter into any position.

As a newer prediction market, Plus500 isn't on the radar of many people in the U.S. However, that should change soon, as it's clearly one of the best platforms I've used so far. The dedicated mobile app, available for both iOS and Android, makes it especially easy to get started and make predictions from anywhere.

Is Plus500 legal and legit?

Short answer: Yes, Plus500 is legal and legitimate in the United States. 

Its U.S. prediction markets run on event contracts overseen by the federal regulator Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), with clearing through Kalshi Klear LLC, a registered derivatives clearing organization. The company itself is a registered futures commission merchant and NFA member. It collects your identity documents directly during KYC, which is exactly what you want from a regulated prediction market.

Legitimacy doesn’t erase the risk, though. Each event contract you buy could result in you losing all the money you risked, if the outcome goes against you. On top of that, whether you can trade on Plus500 at all depends on your state, as some states are engaged in legal battles against prediction markets. Be sure to verify that Plus500 accepts customers from your state before registering.
