Yes, Kalshi is legal in Florida

Kalshi is fully legal in Florida because it operates as a Designated Contract Market (DCM) and is regulated by the CFTC. DCMs are federally approved exchanges under the Commodity Exchange Act where people can trade contracts tied to real-world events.

Sports betting is legal in Florida, but only at Hard Rock Bet. While Hard Rock Bet may entice some users, Kalshi and other apps like Kalshi offer far more trading opportunities. Since Kalshi is a federally regulated financial exchange, users aren't limited to trading only on sports, but also on inflation numbers, election outcomes, cultural events, and more.

How Kalshi works

Kalshi uses a basic 'Yes/No' contract system. Every contract comes with a clear question regarding something that can be verified in the real world, and you choose either Yes or No based on what you think will happen. 

For example, an available market in Florida is: “Will the Florida Gators win the next SEC championship?” You just have to choose Yes or No and lock in your selection.

Every contract trades between 1¢ and 99¢. If Yes on the Gators to win the SEC is trading at 9¢, it basically means traders believe they have a 9% chance of earning the conference title.

When the event settles, every winning contract pays $1, and every losing contract pays $0. If the Yes contract at 9¢ is correct, then traders will earn a 91¢ profit for every contract they own. Contracts for those who traded No settle at $0. As you see, every trade has an equal and opposite trade attached. That's because at Kalshi, you trade against other users, not the house. Kalshi just matches buyers and sellers.

At Kalshi, you always have the option to cash out early. For example, if you purchased a Yes contract for Florida to win the SEC, but then one of the Gators’ star players gets injured, you could immediately cash out to cut your losses. Or if Florida wins their first five games, their chances of winning the SEC may rise on Kalshi from 9% to 17%. You could sell your contracts for a small profit or let them ride and hope for a bigger payday if they are crowned champs. 

Is Kalshi the same as sports betting in Florida?

While there are certain similarities between Kalshi and sportsbooks, there are also many differences.

For one, Florida already has legal sports betting, and Hard Rock Bet is the exclusive provider. It’s licensed under state gaming law and overseen by compacts with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Kalshi, on the other hand, is federally regulated as a DCM, so its contracts are treated as financial instruments, which are not legally equivalent to sports wagers. 

The way these entities operate is different. When you bet on the Dolphins at a sportsbook like Hard Rock Bet, you’re wagering against the house, which sets the odds and dictates how much you stand to win from that bet. Kalshi doesn't set its own odds. Rather, it allows traders on the platform to do so by buying and selling contracts. 

The tax implications of each platform are also different. Hard Rock Bet will issue you a W-2G form to file with the IRS. which is used to report gambling winnings. Kalshi sends 1099 forms and Profit & Loss (P&L) statements as necessary, which are more akin to reporting freelance income. Additionally, Kalshi now offers Combos, similar to parlays at sportsbooks, allowing you to stack multiple contracts into a single prediction for a potentially larger payout. 

Politics and elections

Floridians can trade contracts on matters like “Who will be the Republican nominee for Florida Governor?" or “Will the Democratic Party win Florida’s Senate seat?”

In addition to the major political events in the state, you can also find contracts for district-level contests across FL‑02, FL‑07, and FL‑27. The odds for these markets move with polls, endorsements, and campaign updates.

Economics, weather, and everything else

Kalshi goes far beyond sports and politics. For instance, you can trade on outcomes tied to the Federal Reserve, inflation, or recession risk with contracts like, “Will US inflation run above 4% this year?”

Contracts for weather and pop culture are also available. You can purchase contracts related to whether a movie will win Best Picture at the Oscars, whether a couple will win Love Island, or how much rain Miami will get this month.

How to sign up with Kalshi in Florida

Creating an account at Kalshi in Florida takes less than five minutes. Here's how to get started today:

1. Open the Kalshi app or visit the official site and hit Sign Up.
2. Tap the Google logo to link your profile, then verify your phone number. You can also register via email or Apple.
