The North Carolina House of Representatives voted 51-50 against SB 688 that would have established the rules to authorize and regulate online sports gambling.

Critics cited dangers of sports betting, which was most notably the potential for gambling addiction. 

However, Representative Wesley Harris aptly posited, “The black market does exist and people are already gambling. But there is no regulation and there’s no help for those people.”

Additionally, bordering states Virginia and Tennessee have already legalized online sport betting, and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has already stated he’d sign off on legislation to legalize online sports gambling.

Of course, it’s also contradictory that in-person sports betting is already legal in North Carolina, isn’t it?
