New York Reaches Historic $2 Billion in Monthly Legal Sports Betting Handle

The state of New York keeps setting the bar concerning the broad U.S. legal sports betting market. The state features a large selection of our best sportsbooks.
New York sports betting has managed to break record after record since joining the U.S. legal sports betting family in January 2022, with October 2023 becoming another milestone month for New York and the broader American sports wagering scene.
New York's milestone October gives the Empire State the top 14 all-time best monthly handles for any state since the Supreme Court overturned its blanket ban on sports wagering in 2018. October's number also smashed a handle record set just one month before. Numerous NY sportsbook promos possibly aided the numbers.
The effect of five full weeks of NFL action — including a game between the New York Jets and New York Giants — was notable.
About that record handle
New York State Gaming Commission reported Thursday that NY sports betting apps surpassed the almost unforeseen $2 billion plateau for a given month. New York's best betting sites combined to go $6.8 million over the $2 billion mark.
With retail numbers not yet released, New York's total legal sports betting haul could grow by $10 million to $15 million over the next few days.
New York's October handle is up 33% year-over-year. It is over $200 million more, or 17.6% higher than the previous $1.77 billion recorded in September, a month that also enjoyed five full weekends of NFL action.
Revenues also reached record highs
New York's eight mobile sports betting providers also saw record monthly revenues from their October haul. Over $166 million in revenues was reported for New York's best sports betting sites, up slightly from the previous record of $165.6 million from September.
New York sports book revenues were $146.8 million in October 2022.
Revenues would have been better if not for an underwhelming 8.3% hold in October, down from 9.5% in September.
Thanks to a 51% tax rate for New York sportsbooks, $84.8 million in tax revenues were collected from providers.
Another record for FanDuel New York
As usual, it was a battle between FanDuel New York and DraftKings New York for the best New York sports betting app. The two combined for a 77% October market share in the Empire State.
FanDuel set a new all-time high for a single-sportsbook monthly haul in a state with an astounding $891.9 million in bets — a 44.4% New York market share. That number alone would eclipse a monthly combined sports betting record for just about any other state in the nation.
FanDuel also set a new high-water mark for monthly sportsbook revenues with $83.1 million.
DraftKings New York finished second with a $652.3 million October handle. That's an actual 8.1% month-over-month drop from the sportsbook's previous record of $710.5 million set in September. DraftKings' revenues came in at $59.3 million for October.
Caesars Sportsbook New York finished third with $193.2 million in bets in October, with BetRivers New York coming in a respectable fourth with $114.1 million in October wagers. BetRivers doubled their previous record monthly handle of $50.1 million in bets, set in September.
