The odds for the San Diego Padres to win the 2022 World Series have dropped considerably following the potential acquisition of outfielder Juan Soto and first baseman Josh Bell from the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

The Nationals reportedly received starting pitchers MacKenzie Gore and Jarlin Susana, outfielders Robert Hassell III and James Woods, and shortstop C.J. Abrams. Another major-league player is also included in the package heading to Washington from the Padres.

Obviously adding the runner-up to win the National League MVP Award is a huge boost to the San Diego offense, and the switch-hitting Bell isn’t an afterthought, either.

With superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. (wrist) expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment in the near future, the Friars are about to welcome three All-Star caliber bats to the lineup in short order.

Last season, Soto posted a 7.1 WAR, Bell recorded a 3.1 mark, and Tatis finished at 6.6 from Baseball Reference.

San Diego also has six-time All-Star third baseman Manny Machado locked into the heart of their order, as the Padres will soon boast one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball.

The organization also made a huge splash to acquire closer Josh Hader on Monday from the Milwaukee Brewers. Hader currently paces the majors in saves with 29 and posted a 3.4 WAR of his own last season.

The Padres also rank eighth in team ERA with a 3.74 mark, and their 3.80 xFIP is 11th best in the league, so pitching is far from a weakness.

Add it all up, and bookmakers are viewing the Padres as legitimate contenders, even if they’re currently holding just a two-game lead in the second NL Wild Card spot.
