Over the past week, there was a significant move in the odds of Duke power forward Paolo Banchero, who was priced in the range of +1400 to get drafted No. 1 a week ago, and then he was suddenly favored on the eve of the draft.
That move in Banchero’s direction looked similar to what happened in this year’s NFL Draft, when Georgia defensive end Travon Walker made a late charge to overtake Aidan Hutchinson for the No. 1 pick, but then ESPN’s plugged-in NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski put out his tweet Thursday morning and that stopped the top pick market in its tracks. It’s understandable because Wojnarowski has a reputation of knowing which players are going when and where in the draft, routinely beating the official announcement.
Sportsbooks pulled down the top pick odds and FanDuel returned to action first, with Auburn power forward Jabari Smith heavily favored at -10000 and Banchero with the second shortest odds at +1000. However, even after Wojnarowski’s report, the price for Smith moved to -6000 and Banchero’s odds dropped to +550. There is still some belief out there in Banchero, whether it is misplaced or not, to have the price keep shifting in his direction.
If nothing else, this uncertainty has added some spice to this year’s NBA Draft.
