A New Jersey bettor placed a $200 wager on Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to win the 2022 NFL MVP Award at +17500 odds at Caesars Sportsbook before the Dolphins acquired wide receiver Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.

The bet would pay out a cool $35,000, and Caesars has promptly dropped Tagovailoa’s MVP odds down to +7500.

Tagovailoa has largely underwhelmed through two seasons with the Dolphins since being selected fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.

He began his NFL career nursing a hip injury sustained during his final year with the Alabama Crimson Tide and backing up veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Tagovailoa missed five games last year due to two injuries: fractured ribs and a fractured middle finger on his throwing hand.

Tagovailoa sports a pedestrian 13-8 record as a starter with a 27-15 touchdown-to-interception ratio and an 88.8 career quarterback

rating.

However, the acquisition of Hill to pair with Tagovailoa’s college teammate Jaylen Waddle atop the wide receiver depth chart projects to be a solid upgrade for the third-year quarterback’s weapons in the passing attack.

Plus, Tagovailoa did lead the Crimson Tide to a College Football Playoff National Championship in 2017.

Then he received the Sporting News College Football Player of the Year Award, won the Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Award the following season.

So, while the results haven’t jumped off the page immediately at the highest level, Tagovailoa’s college resume and pedigree entering the NFL shouldn’t be overlooked entirely.

Bookmakers were quick to adjust his NFL MVP odds, after all.

DraftKings Sportsbook moved the Miami signal-caller from +10000 to win the MVP Award to +6500 following the Hill acquisition.

Now, Tagovailoa just has to beat out veteran Teddy Bridgewater for the starting quarterback job.
