I was wondering why this was so low. I don't like to look at rankings alone so I decided to do some digging.
I found out this from tennis.com:
"It turns out that Stephens has qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore, clinching her spot when she was announced as a wild card into this week's event in Moscow and Elina Svitolina was not."
How much effort will Sloane put into this match? Will she still want to win but not put in a good effort?
This from the same article at tennis.com:
Before that, there had been three spots left in the field for Singapore and four players—Stephens, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina and Kiki Bertens— still in contention. While Stephens, Pliskova and Bertens are all playing in Moscow this week, Svitolina is taking the week off, which means that she cannot move in front of the No. 6-placed Stephens.
The Singapore standings for the final three spots are as follows: No. 7 Elina Svitolina with 3,850 points, No. 8 Karolina Pliskova with 3,840 points and No. 9 Kiki Bertens with 3,710 points.
So I thought maybe Karolina and Kiki would be putting in a good effort to qualify. The problem I see is that they are playing against good opponents so it won't be just a walk in the park.
Kiki (-178 or -3) is playing against #31 Sasnovich and Karolina (-318 or -4.5) is playing #161 Zvonareva who has 4 wins in a row but those have all been in the qualifying rounds of this Moscow tournament so it's not like she has been playing top talent and beating them.
Any input?
