i think the red card actually hurt the total, especially if the away team is down. they tend to go into a more defensive shell since they are playing away

Red cards offer no rhyme or reason to totals in my experience. I've seen plenty of times where the team that scores after the red card is the team that received the red card. Some matches the team that is down a man loses all focus and gets pounded for goals, some they tighten up and you see nothing else.
