I mean almost every team that qualifies does so by showing offensive prowess, not by sitting back and hoping for a tie, and yet we see slow, defensive mind-numbing tactics by so many of the greats! well france and italy especially took it up the ass this time for sitting back and not sending everything they have forward, and brazil clearly suffered for it too. the way I see it nobody wants to be the player to make the one major mistake that will knock their team out, so they almost always settle for the easy pass, the simple play. meanwhile the third place games are always crackers because they have nothing to lose anymore and can afford to be more daring. here's hoping countries will start realising goals are what we all want to see!

brazil used to play even more freely than this 3rd place game, but they didn't win enough cups so they changed. no choice.

of course I wish, but it cannot happen for the simple reason that usually, there's something to play for. The 3rd place was a challange for Turkey in 2002, but not for these guys tonight, they played for the fans, just.

No. Good soccer takes more brains than running from one end to the other. That's fifty and sixty years ago.

It was a great game to watch today, thats for sure... But sometimes, those tight defensive games are jus as exciting to watch... Depends on how you look at it.

I;'ve seen many great 0-0 matches.

and i tend to agree with Dark Horse, but I hope that most of the teams will play like this, not like Inter Milano. That's amazing tactics, but it takes away the fun and slowly, people will like football less if such a trend would be developed.

Think of how many big games end up getting decided by one bad moment or one bad call by the refs. IMO it would be smarter for teams to go forward and get a few goals in the games to get the "single deciding moment" aspect out of the games.

I'm not speaking from a "1-0 automatically means a bad game" mindset either. I can appreciate a low scoring game, but what I don't have time for are low chance, cagey, chess-match style games. There has to be some sort of passion in the attacks, no more of these long, easily cleared balls kicked in from your own half. Lack of goals aren't what make a bad soccer match, it's lack of passion.

                      You just contradicted yourself.

Defensive mentalities win games, everyone likes open games but that's not how you win Championships.

bs -- uruguay is a classic example of a team making it far BY attacking. they almost beat the germans (one of the best in the world) doing just that

                          ... Where?

Teams with nothing to lose always take more risks.

Yes, and it's a shame, because I'm afraid tomorrow's final is going to be just like Germany/Spain was --

I'm really hoping the Netherlands aren't going to sit back, because if so they are fukked just like Germany was.
