They don't take into consideration what a team needs to do in a match in order to qualify, why it may not always be beneficial to outright win a match or what's been going on with a team leading into the World Cup. Football players are tired. They played 50-60 games (including cup & international games) and motivation can be a problem. You will have a much better team chemistry with a team that you played for 10-20 games.

Also, they don't bother themselves too much, they don't give %100 in order to avoid unnecessary injuries etc. If they get injuried, they may not play next season. Money is more important then national things..at least in this age.. Money is the word today..

Basketball: back and forth, up and down til you fall asleep. I just hate high-scoring sports. Even if you defend well you end up with ~100 points against you. Rubbish.
Ice Hockey: Don't watch it and I'm having trouble following the puck. Like basketball it's too fast and too much up and down the rink. But seems like a proper sport. Apart from the preposterous fighting.
American Football: I really enjoy watching the Superbowl every year. Can be a great sport of times. But the constant stop-and-go prevents me from following it more frequently. Games last too long. Rugby is better.
Baseball: Absolutely no ****ing clue about Baseball. At least the scores don't consist of 187 different numbers like in cricket.

Let's move to more general things why US sports suck:

- the stupid draft systems: that seems like borderline socialism which is especially weird for a country like the USA. I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to be forced to play for a team you hate and against the team you support
- play-offs: absolute rubbish. The fairest way to decide the best team in the league is to play each team home and away. But instead you play one team like 4 times and another one only one time and have these pointless playoffs on top of that
- the general league system: leagues are closed, you can't get relegated or promoted. How does that even work? What if you want to play football but are not good enough to get into the NFL or don't attend one of the colleges? I guess there are leagues below the major leagues?! But why even bother if you can't get promoted?
- Franchises instead of clubs: Symbol of the commercialization of US sports. Imagine you wake up one day and your team has moved to another city lol. Rubbish. Clubs should be owned by the fans.
- no draws: Only Americans think forcing overtime in non-playoff games is exciting and a good thing
- not much of a fan culture: I was shocked to hear during a Superbowl broadcast that there are no away sections in the stadiums. So if you're lucky enough to get a ticket as an away fan you have to sit among rival supporters?!? There doesn't seem to be lot of organized support anyway. unlike the qualifying rounds there is no home and home series. Mangers know the winning strategy is to get points. Since the name of the game is defense, as it is with any sport, managers set up their teams for this. In addition, unless your team is a super power in soccer, all the rest of the teams are equal.

so with teams being equal and each having the defense first thinking, it is difficult to win matches in pool play. A side note to consider also is it takes a lot of energy to win a game vs just sitting back playing defense and counter attacking when possible.

since the trick is to qualify it makes it easier to to win the last game or draw, conserve energy to win this game, and move the next round where anything can happen.
