Got a question for you. What is the benefit to taking a money line of say -155 over a -1/2 spread at like -145? Why would they be any different?

absolutely no advantage at all...but books like bodog won't let you parlay the spread which usually is cheaper than the ML

The reason it's there is because the other team is getting +1/2 that covers both a win and a draw. But for the fav anything short of a win will be a loser for the spread and the ML.
