Vreston's Champions League Group Analysis - What teams need to happen to advance

Hi everyone!

It's been a long time!

I decided to write a few words about what needs to happen in each group for teams to advance to the next stage of 16.

Don't have much time so here we go.

Group A

The last games of this stage have Olympiakos vs Malme and Juventus vs Atletico Madrid

Olympiakos advances with a win against Malme and a loss by Juventus. Olympiakos is eliminated from European play if they lose to Malme since the Swedes have the advantage in case of a point tie.
If Juventus wins by 2-0 and over they finish first in their group. In any other case Atletico finishes in first place.


Group B

Here we have Liverpool vs Basel and Real Madrid vs Ludogorets
Real is sure to finish first in the group. Liverpool needs only a win to continue in the Champions League whereas if they lose or draw, if Ludogorets surprises and beats Real they are knocked out of European competitions. Fro the reds to continue in Europe they have to have the same or better result as Ludogorets. Basel needs not to lose and they are sure to advance to the final 16. The only way they are knocked out is if they lose and Ludogorets beats Real.

Group C

Monaco vs Zenit and Benfica - Leverkusen

Benfica is already out and in case of a point tie with Zenit they don't have the advantage since they lost both games to them. If Zenit beats Monaco they advance to the final 16. In any other case they have clinched the 3rd place and continue in the Europa League. If Monaco beats Zenit they finish first in the group with a loss or draw by Leverkusen in Portugal. Leverkusen has already advanced and all we need to find out is if they finish first or second in their group.

I was in a hurry before so I didn't have time to write about Group D

The games are in play.

Galatasaray vs Arsenal and Dortmund vs Anderlecht

There are no scenarios in this group since it's already know which teams will advance and where. Arsenal and Dortmund have already clinched spots to the next stage of the Champions League and all that we will find out is which team will finish first and which second in the group. Only if Dortmund loses to Anderlect and Arsenal wins will they lose first place. Anderlecht will continue in the Europa League.

Now for the rest of the groups.


Group E

Roma vs Manchester City and Bayern Munich vs CSKA Moscow.

Bayern will finish 1st in the group. If Roma beats Man City they will advance to the final 16 whereas in case of a draw, CSKA must have the same or worse result. For City to advance to the next stage they must beat Roma and CSKA to not beat Bayern. Everything depends on what CSKA does against Bayern.
This group is the most interesting because a lot can still happen.


Group F

The games here will be Barcelona vs Paris St. Germain and Ajax vs Apoel Nicosia.
In this group the teams that will advance have been known for a while now. Barcelona and PSG have already advanced and the game between them will decide who will finish first. Barcelona needs only a win and PSG either a draw or win.
Apoel needs only a win to continue in the Europa league stage of 32 teams. Any other result sends Ajax to the Europa League.


Group G

The games here are Chelsea vs Sporting Lisbon and Maribor - Schalke.

Chelsea has clinched first place in this group already. If Sporting wins or draws, then they also advance to the next stage of the Champions League. If they lose, then they need Schalke to not beat Maribor.
If Schalke draws against Maribor they will advance to the final 32 of the Europa League whereas with a win they will hope that Sporting loses.
Maribor needs only a win over Schalke to advance to the Europa League.


Group H

The games here are Porto vs Shakhtar Donetsk and Athletic Bilbao vs BATE Borisov.

Porto and Shakhtar have already advanced to the final 16 with Porto clinching first place in the group.
In the other game of the group, BATE needs only a win to continue in the Europa League final 32 or else that's it for them in European competitions for this season and Bilbao continues instead.
