There is something to note about betting Historically Great Teams to win against perennial mid-low table teams, and knowing where they will be and are playing in the future.
I'll take Manchester United this year as an example: Ignoring games against the teams that were not in the Top Six above them this year, ManU went 18-4-4 (Or 18-8 if you happen to be playing ManU ML).
The quick counter-argument to this is both easy to make and counter: "How do you know who the Top Six will be at the start of the season?" Simple: ManCity, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham, along with ManU will be up there because they have been up there the past 5 years (only Newcastle in 11/12 and Aston Villa in 09/10 have cracked this pool, the team they placed ahead of finished 8th both times)
Let's go a little further with the ManU example: Four of the draws/losses occured on Sept 28, Oct 19, Nov 24, and Dec 7. So what happened on these dates? Every date corresponds to a Champions League Group Match. Knowing that a team is looking ahead to European Competition, and cares more about preparing for that "bigger" game instead of winning the one ahead of them.
In Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona tend to run away from the rest of the league, but if you follow soccer, you'll know Barcelona is about to get hit with player signing sanctions for the next year or so, so they aren't likely to be as improved next year.
Really its a combination of knowing the past few years of league history and knowing what's in store for a team on the next week or two.Comment
