A notorious Singaporean match-fixer claims he won hundreds of thousands of dollars manipulating Socceroos matches, years before he started rigging the Victorian Premier League.
In a new book, on the eve of the World Cup, Wilson Raj Perumal's claims about dozens of thrown matches have sparked an investigation by FIFA, football's world governing body.
Perumal said he paid Togolese players to fix a 2008 match against Australia. In 2010, he claims he paid a referee to corrupt a match between the Socceroos and Egypt. Perumal does not allege any wrongdoing by Australian players or officials. It is believed to be the first time fixing claims have been made regarding a specific Socceroos match.
Perumal masterminded the largest match-fixing scandal in Australian history when he paid players and the coach of the Southern Stars to achieve results during the 2013 Victorian Premier League season, police say.
Perumal had been under police protection in Hungary while organising the Southern Stars fix, but was arrested in Finland last month after authorities acted on an international arrest warrant. While other countries plan to extradite Perumal, Victoria Police was unable to comment.
In his book, co-written with two Italian journalists, Perumal said that in 2010 a referee was paid to ensure at least three goals were scored during an Egypt-Australia match in Cairo. Egypt scored in the 29th and 60th minutes, but were held out by the Socceroos until a controversial penalty was paid against then captain Lucas Neill in the 90th minute. The Pharaohs scored and won 3-0.
Perumal claims he sent a middle man to negotiate with Egyptian football authorities before the match to ensure their referee was selected to officiate.
Perumal writes that the Intercontinental Cup, contested by eight under-23 sides in Malaysia in 2008, was thrown by paying the entire Togolese side $50,000 a match.
Perumal bet $70,000 on Togo to beat or draw with Australia. When Togo fell 4-0 behind, Perumal writes that he told the coach to instruct his players to receive red cards or feign injuries until they had too few players and the match had to be abandoned. If the match was abandoned, the $70,000 he had bet would be refunded. Two Togo players received red cards and three went off injured in the second half, forcing the referee to abandon the match.
Perumal also claims he paid two Australians, Mirko Jurilj and Abbas Saad, to fix matches while they played in Singapore and Malaysia during the 1990s and early 2000s - allegations the pair have repeatedly denied. Both were convicted, but Saad had a global ban lifted by FIFA in 1996 and a lifetime ban lifted by the Singapore Football Association in 2009. Jurilj served 100 days in prison and has not had his Singapore ban lifted.
