I'm convinced many of these people officiating games (mlb, nba, whatever) are frustrated players who were never quite good enough to make it as pros. Many of them also are convinced that the crowd is there to watch them.
Did Greinke fukk up? Sure, he did. But a good ump would have simply chewed his ass for all to see and allowed him to go back to the mound with his tail tucked between his legs.
I wasn't watching the game but I did see the video. And by Greinke's immediate reaction to getting the boot, I doubt he said anything disparaging to the ump; he just spiked the ball in the opposite direction after taking a few steps away from him, no less. Sure, it was unprofessional and the letter of the law warrants an ejection. However, good umps - those who actually take pride in being an ump and not a celebrity - should also factor in the spirit of the law.Comment -
