Mexico City is interested in hosting two NHL preseason games, but no official talks have taken place.

Joaquin de la Garma, the president of Mexico Ice Hockey Federation, said there has been some informal contact between the league and Horacio De la Vega, the director of the Sports Institute of the City of Mexico.

Mexican news agency Notimex first reported that sports and government officials were looking to bring NHL games to the city. De la Garma said there have been two meetings with NHL executives about holding preseason games in Mexico City next preseason, according to the report.

NHL sources denied that there have been talks for any games in Mexico in the fall.

The 2016 World Cup of Hockey is being played in Toronto from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1, so the timing of a fall game in Mexico likely would not work for the league.

Notimex cited Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes as the most likely venue, but an ice rink would have to be installed.

De la Garma also said the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins are the most popular teams in Mexico, according to Notimex.
