    MLB trivia - 6/2/06
I am a big trivia head and maybe there are more of those here - so I want to try to bring that to the forum every once in awhile. What I don't want are questions that someone is just going to get on a quick look-up. So I am experimenting a bit here. Feedback is more than welcome.

I'm not sure how difficult this first question is. Only one way to find out . . .

Here is the question: what is the thread in this list of teams?

    moving forward from 1960

    New York Yankees
    Boston Red Sox
    Detroit Tigers
    Milwaukee Brewers
    Kansas City Royals
    Minnesota Twins
    Boston Red Sox

I know the answer (and well done on making it obscure) but I didn't want to spoil it for everyone else.

Well, As a RedSox fan, I know they always seem to hook-up against the Cardinals in the World Series and I know the Cards have been there often...So what the hell, I'm guessing it's teams who have played the Cardinals in the Fall Classic since 1960.

I was thinking something along those lines as well, but the Brewers are throwing me off.

Owned, if I remember correctly, I believe it was the Brewers versus Cardinals in 1982...Gorman Thomas, Cecil Cooper, Yount, Molitor and Oglivy. I loved those guys, "Harvey's Wallbangers" as the slogan went.

You are correct. I was stupidly just thinking about WS winners. I think you are correct with your original guess, I was looking for a more complicated answer.

Nice job! You guys have figured it out. They are the teams that have met the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series since 1960.

Unfortunately there is no actual prize for this (other than the self-satisfaction of basking in the glow of your superior intellect).

All hail stumpage who cannot be stumped!

Thanks Mudcat...I'd like to thank my family, for supporting me in my trivia hunt. Also my dear wife, and of course the Academy for giving me this opportunity, etc. etc.....

Seriously Mud, keep the trivia coming. I love that stuff. Hope you don't feel this is hijacking your thread, and perhaps this one is well known, but there are 8 professional teams in the so-called four "Major" North American sports whose name does not end in an "s". Give it a shot if you get a chance.....

Great! Glad to hear you are interested in trivia. I will keep it coming, probably at least a few times a week.

If you've got questions, I hope you will let them fly too.

As for this current question, I should be able to get this without doing a look-up . . . .

Yep, I got the first 6 right away but had to go league-by-league, team-by-team to remember the last 2. It took a few minutes but I got 'em.

I'm going to post them now - down below - so anyone who wants to try to figure this out on your own, don't read the rest of this post.

                      Boston Red Sox
                      Chicago White Sox
                      Utah Jazz
                      Miami Heat
                      Orlando Magic
                      Minnesota Wild
                      Tampa Bay Lightning
                      Colorado Avalanche

I remember seeing this question somewhere and think I know the answers, but not even sure myself, but the question was "What Division I schools do not have the word University in their name?" I believe there are 4 or 5 (I think I got 4 in my head right now without looking them up).

Well that goes right to a weak spot for me: US college sports.

                          I would say Boston College.

And that's all I'm saying at the moment.

I'm thinking maybe we're looking for schools that call themselves Institutes. There's VMI, Virginia Military Institute (??). There's MIT. I don't know if they're division 1 though. My guess would be VMI is and MIT isn't.

And then I wonder about the service academies. I don't know if they count. Probably not.

It will make a difference depending which sport you want a list from within Division-I or IA collegiate sports. As far as Division-1A football: Mudcat already mentioned Boston College and the service academies (US Millitary, US Air Force, US Naval), and the only other one I can think of is Georgia Tech (officially Georgia Institute of Technology).

Men's Division I basketball would include those same five plus VMI, Bethune-Cookman College, Canisius College, Centenary College, Iona College, St. Peter's College, The Citadel, College of William & Mary, Coppin State College, Wagner College, Dartmouth College, Sienna College, Davidson College, Wooford College, Manhattan College and Providence College.

I was thinking Div 1 Football and you are correct, GT was the last one I was forgetting.

My first thought was Eddie Gaedel but, on second though, I seem to remember they gave him a fraction as a joke.

                                      I will continue to ponder . . .

                                        Gaedel wore the number 1/8

HINT: It's a fairly recent occurence, in the last 10 years.

I'm having a memory of someone wearing the letter O.

Or maybe my brain is trying too hard and just making things up.

Was there some logical explanation to it that could maybe be figured out? Or was it just a random thing that you would just have to know?

It was the last game at Tiger Stadium, my favorite park, in Sept 1999. The players wore the numbers of great Detroit players from the past, numbers that had been retired in some cases. Gabe Kapler wound up wearing no number in honor of Ty Cobb.

The only other player I can think of to do that in relatively recent history, albeit some 20+ years ago now, was Eric Davis. When he made his MLB debut in 1984 for the Reds, he was called up with the team on the road and they only had one spare road jersey that didn't have a uniform number.

Funny. Ty Cobb did cross my mind as I was racking my brain on this because I know he didn't wear a number. But I didn't make the connection.

The only other player I can think of to do that in relatively recent history, albeit some 20+ years ago now, was Eric Davis. When he made his MLB debut in 1984 for the Reds, he was called up with the team on the road and they only had one spare road jersey that didn't have a uniform number.

I have that final game on tape at Tiger Stadium somewhere....i was and still am a huge tiger fan. I am remember that game like it was yesterday...
