anyone read that piece re the astros clearing $99 million their entire 25 man payroll is $13 million

yes, they better be throwing that back into development and signing some first time eligible free agents soon. Too many of these owners just want to make $ and don't care if the product on the team wins or not.

McCutchen slightly overrated for sure, but there are guys batting .220 signing bigger contracts than this.

Great thievery by the Pirates here. Even if he flops in the next 5 years he's worth the money they gave him.

Cutch took the early money and might lose 200-300 million

after 4 more seasons he might still get paid pretty big for 2019 season and beyond when he is 32 years old

I don't think there was big competition for Morneau after his contract ran out

any GM could have had him and he took a big pay cut from his last contract to sign with Colorado

no one saw that coming

but least of all the Pirates GM couldn't have seen that coming, as he had zero HRs and 5 rbi in 130 plate appearances in the end of the regular season and playoffs in black and gold.

they got a minor league reliever with 1.1 innings pitched experience who never pitched in the majors for him.... whom they later released and the pirates signed again.

So they gave him away for nothing and could have signed him in the offseason, but didn't think him worth it
