#76hmm what huge impact did he have on the nfl?
in another thread someone said he was a big part of the merger which couldn't be more false, he was against it.
Reality is davis's biggest NFL impact was choosing black and silver as the team colors. In a different thread someone called him an innovator of innovators, that gave me a good laugh.Comment -

Never said he was a part of the merger. He was not. Never called him an innovator either.
I did say he had a huge impact on the NFL.
Pretty sure what I listed above would back that up.Comment -

#90Although Al Davis' Raiders cheated in many ways (especially with the fake fumble into the endzone), the man is a legend. Hated by many, he was a well respected man....and firece with wanting to win. Giving any and all players a chance, crafty with his dealings against the old NFL for players, and a key coach/owner/commissioner in the development of the AFL/NFL leagues. Plain and simple......the guy was a genius in his heydays and the AFL would've NEVER succeeded as quickly as it did without his presence. Al scared the NFL into the merger. And yes, he started with the LA CHARGERS as a wide receiver coach, so even this Charger fan can respectfully say....
Rest in peace, Al.Comment -

#105Happy birthday, Al! I miss the old seventies teams. Some of Al's greatest quotes:
1. "Just win, baby!"
2. "Once a Raider, always a Raider."
3. "The fire that burns brightest in the Raiders organization is the will to win."
4. "Wake up Carolee, the plane is waiting for us, we have to get to the game."
5. "We would rather be feared than respected."
6. "I have never forgiven myself…that I might have made a mistake."
7. "No one could have brought in more personnel than we have to build a football team."
8. "If it weren't for a new rule that came into being, we'd have played three years in a row in the championship game."
9. "Why should I talk to you? I don't know where you're from."
10. "I saw greatness in John and he lived up to it. I also saw a tremendous competitor who loved to win. John is a standard bearer, someone that players, coaches, fans and the Raider Nation can all look up to. One of his great virtues, the fire that burned brightest in him, was his love and passion for football, which was seldom ever equaled."
