Athlete comes from The Greek word athlētēs, anyone who participates in a contest or competes for a prize or áthlon, a contest.

I took this thread to mean people were saying formula one or nascar or indy were not athletes because it doesnt require physical conditioning and stamina, as if most people could or would have the guts to drive in Le Mans or drive at indy up to 200 miles an hour, even without other cars on the track. Obviously auto racing and equestrian events are different than baseball.

I don't know where you draw the line, I remember when espn was showing poker all the time, and debating the term "athletes" and wondering if the ability to "bluff" was really an athletic endeavor. Are chess players or tiddlywink players "athletes" because they take place in a contest or compete for a prize?

If JJ drives a NASCAR car in 125 degree temperature wearing a fire suit he will lose 50 lbs of that lard he is carrying around his belly.

this is obviously not the only definition.

            dictionary.com:

noun a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.

If golfers and basketball and football and baseball players can be called athletes then nascar and indy guys who risk their lives at insane speeds should definitely be called athletes. Here is a number of all the guys who died driving at certain tracks and here is the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...racing_crashes Tell me how many guys died playing baseball, football, basketball, soccer or golf? The five tracks with the most competitor fatalities 1 Indianapolis Motor Speedway 56 2 Nürburgring 48 3 Monza 30 4 Daytona International Speedway 24 5 Le Mans 24
Again just because it's difficult doesn't make them athletes....

Yes. It does, driving a vehicle at that speeds takes plenty of physical and mental energy. It's like saying a QB is not a athelete because he takes three steps and throws a football.

Something being difficult does not make someone an athlete.

                          So no, it doesn't.

Being a winning gambler is difficult.

I suppose with his thinking JJ thinks that the guy who drives the tank is not a soldier because he doesn't fire his rifle like an infantry man.
