I took this thread to mean people were saying formula one or nascar or indy were not athletes because it doesnt require physical conditioning and stamina, as if most people could or would have the guts to drive in Le Mans or drive at indy up to 200 miles an hour, even without other cars on the track. Obviously auto racing and equestrian events are different than baseball.

I don't know where you draw the line, I remember when espn was showing poker all the time, and debating the term "athletes" and wondering if the ability to "bluff" was really an athletic endeavor. Are chess players or tiddlywink players "athletes" because they take place in a contest or compete for a prize?

At average speeds at around 140 miles an hour surrounded by other cars doing the same! Have you ever been over 90-95 miles an hour in a car on a straight freeway? If golfers and basketball and football and baseball players can be called athletes then nascar and indy guys who risk their lives at insane speeds should definitely be called athletes.
