LB, sorry for jumping the gun earlier. I was out on the piss, saw Uruguay win, celebrated that (have them at 12/1 to win this thing) and came to see this thread. I absolutely adore Messi. My favourite player in the world despite being a Liverpool supporter.
Messi usually plays in a free-role or in the middle of the attack for Barcelona. For Argentina, he's played a much more deeper role. Almost at CM, which is where Xavi plays for Barcelona. Messi's played a similar role for Argentina so I wouldn't have expected him to score a lot. He created plenty of chances but the strikers couldn't convert.
I agree with you that Messi has to produce those moments of magic like Maradona did but unfortunately for Lionel, Argentina needs a half decent manager first who will play to Messi's strength and not expect him to do everything.
Rather, I feel that Messi adjusts more to the Argentina style than any other player. He plays more as a part of a team than the likes of Aguero, Tevez, Higuain, De Maria etc. Think about it, what did Aguero, Tevez or De Maria do this tournament? Fuk all and they're supposed to be among the best in the world.Comment -

I find it staggering that people can't see this and recognise that this is the biggest problem with Argentina. They have NO midfielders that can keep the ball and play a pass forward. Messi had a fantastic WC IMO and hit the post 4 or 5 times off memory despite playing 6 on 1 in attack for most of the tournament.Comment
