#1441Reactions to the reports of the martyrdom of Osama bin Laden abound and dominate the public sphere; the entire world has been seemingly either stumbling through false photoshopped pictures of the Shaykh’s defamed face or listening to much touted rhetorical statements of premature victory and progress in the War on Terror.
President Obama kicked off the trend by explaining that, “For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda's leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies. The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al Qaeda.”
Always looking for a good reason to celebrate, the American citizenry took immediately to acting on its most immediate impulse: hedonist gatherings quickly formulated on the pavements of US cities as most Americans just love a good justification to booze and celebrate as press releases from influential individuals across the world praised the day as one of victory and the media inundated everyone with round the clock reporting hailing the rhetoric of the “free world,” that is victory for “democracy” and the “American way.”
This is American ‘exceptionalism’ in full display; a country that was founded on the imperialist remnants of the Roman Empire and the racist doctrine of manifest destiny has always considered itself unique among nations and will now have an opportunity to shine for weeks as those with conscience, souls and compassion will be exposed to the continuous hypocrisy of the domestic constituents inside an imperial base that promote a black and white worldview and assume that others most certainly desire to be more like them, while enforcing such notions at the barrels of guns since the inception of what most try to pass off as the greatest democracy.
Surely, in the public displays of American ignorance that are today as common a nostalgic piece of American culture as American pie, we must reflect on these events and consider the very serious differences between us and them in the context of this unfolding discussion between Muslims and disbelievers, both varieties friend and foe.
That is not meant to be an absolute adoption of the view that there is a Clash of Civilizations, but rather an even more important fundamental distinction that being an awareness that absent Islam there is no such thing as civilization, not in the truest meaning of the word…indeed all of debauchery and empire is an offshoot of pagan, polytheistic society – it goes hand in hand with riches for the few, poverty for the many, racism, ethnic conflict, genocide, death of creativity and learning and it has forever clothed its heinous external aggression via liberal tolerance for the internal few and willing adherents ready to adopt their exceptionalist views.
Our nominal leaders do not understand this fundamental distinction today and so we suffer on the opposite end of physical, mental and spiritual occupation as Islam so too has been commoditized to suit the needs of the colonizers. It was that necessary crucial understanding and ability to respond accordingly and in likeness that separated Osama bin Laden and will make him live on in this world and the next. As Americans take to the streets in drunken stupor, absent meaning, and loving this world blind to the impending disintegration of the empire despite the death of the day’s Geronimo, we should reflect on the reality that despite what we say our actions too indicate that we have adopted this hedonist folly. Were we to truly understand that the love of death in the way of truth is the means by which civilization returns, we would be rejecting debauchery and worshipping Allah in the way he that He (ta’ ala) loves. Were we to realize this reality each and every one of us would be Usamah bin Laden.
Allah (aza wa jaal) says in the Quran, “Oh you who believe, answer the call of Allah and his Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life” [8:24];
It is amusing that this verse is constantly cited today in the statements of “good Muslims” that try to brandish today’s mujahideen as terrorists and in order to promote Islam as a peaceful religion. However, as Muhammad bin Ishaq explained, Allah here is actually calling to the sacrifice of jihad as a means to life. He narrated that Urwah bin Az-Zubayr explained this ayah to mean, "Answer when called to jihad through which Allah gives you might after meekness, and strength after weakness, and shields you from the enemy who oppressed you.'' Usamah bin Laden helped return this ummah to understand this principle and helped to rejuvenate the jihad and in this way he sacrificed hoping that we could live yet knowing that there is no life worth living absent Islam.
This is why Allah (ta ala) shuns the folly of popular opinion and inclination to worldly pleasures where he says,
Then fight in Allah's cause - Thou art held responsible only for thyself - and incite the believers. It may be that Allah will restrain the fury of the Unbelievers; for Allah is the strongest in might and in punishment.
Usamah bin Laden, like our own selves will only be responsible for his self, but nhe wasthe epitome of this message. In a world of excuse, compromise, and humiliation he fulfilled the command to fight and incite to fight and helped to initiate what will once be a return to civilization with the defeat of the disbelievers. Obama’s “most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al Qaeda” is the defeat of one at the expense of inciting the mass. Had the sheikh died a normal death, been brought to trial, or disappeared from the radar then he himself would have considered all in loss… instead some cyborg navy seals from the lower classes of America’s slums gave him the martyrdom we all crave and boosted him into the sttus of martyr that will carry on doe decades perhaps centuries if Allah wills. Al-hamdulilah!!!
However, as they parade through the streets in a manner only they know and we are barraged by the attached senseless conversation, media hype and political positioning, one would think that they have attained some form of victory. In this is a sign for people of reflection that they are entering into the beginning of their end. Allah describes their condition in Surah Hijr,
Again and again those who disbelieve wish that they had been Muslims. Leave them alone, to enjoy the good things of this life and to please themselves: let false hope amuse them: soon will knowledge undeceive them. Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand
Obama declares that the world is safer: safer at least for the desired domination of the ever-expanding American-led Eurocentric imperialist project. Yet in reality, only one man has been killed from the beloved ummah of Muhammad (saws) – a man that craved death and martyrdom more than the Navy Seals that martyred him crave the pleasures of this world… a special man from a different age that resisted up unto the end and that was praying sincerely for the day and finally received his wish. The history books, once written by the Muslims, will tell that this martyrdom was a serious milestone to the beginning of an end.
The day after his martyrdom, the National Security Archive released a declassified, 400 page case study on Osama bin Laden conducted by Sandia National Laboratories in the aftermath of the 1998 bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. In it they highlighted that terrorism had “shifted from Marxist-oriented to religious- oriented” was now “third world dominated” a “global phenomenon” and that “our problems with terrorism are exacerbated by our position and by our image in the world” and that therefore “terrorism will never be won, it will always be a world problem.” They never questioned the image, or altering their dominant position, but assumed that terrorism would always be a means of resistance they would face as consequence. This was given then and remains so today.
The psychological assessment concluded that Osama bin Laden was far from a “Gucci terrorist with a fat wallet and a big mouth,” that he was “viewed as a hero in much of the Islamic world,” “had attained near-legendary status,” would be a “likely-martyr symbol if killed” and therefore, “the threat is unlikely to die when bin Laden does.” This was in 1998, much earlier than 9-11, before Iraq and Afghanistan and all that has occurred since. In these contemplations we recognize that the man was an icon and that his end is the means to a new beginning. Even they know this.
Those without the blessing of Islam do not understand the way that we view death. This has always been their downfall. A famous western study conducted on those diagnosed with terminal illnesses and those grieving from the loss of another classified the grieving process with the acronym ‘D.A.B.D.A’ representing denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The fact that many Muslims experienced a range of similar sentiments was evident in the several articles that included the reactions of Muslims across the globe, from internet forums, to Muslim Americans to the streets of Palestine and Cairo.
Initially I felt slightly sick and was awestruck by the news. Looking for some indication that it was yet another false report, I fumbled through several internet pages looking for confirmation, denying that it could possibly be true. I then felt anger at the notion that the arrogant oppressors were able to gloat and were speaking about our beloved as if he was a murderer… images of over a million Iraqis, over a million Afghans, of innocent Palestinian children at the mercy of Apache helicopters, caterpillar bulldozers, and targeted assassinations grew. Then I too felt guilty, for not having done more, for being so weak, so fearful and wishing I could take his place… for a moment I felt sad, depressed and somewhat pessimistic and proceeded to make du’aa. And then suddenly in a moment of acceptance I realized, this was a time to celebrate, there was no need to grieve. The entire range of emotions was almost immediate; the psychological work on death, dying and the grieving process in the west suggests it goes on for months, years, perhaps the rest of life. It is this fundamental understanding that is impossible for a disbeliever to truly grasp and should make us all the more appreciative of the blessing that is Islam.
We place no man on the level of the Messenger of Allah (saws), but similar occurrences marked the death of Muhammad himself. As the death of the Prophet was announced in Medina, dark grief spread throughout that community as well. Anas, the servant of the Prophet, described that, “I have never witnessed a more awful or darker day than that one on which the Messenger of Allah (saws) died." Umar ibn Al Khattab reacted in anger and denial exclaiming "Some of the hypocrites claim that the Messenger of Allah died. The Messenger of Allah did not die, but went to his Lord in the same way as Moses bin ‘Imran did. He stayed away for forty nights, but finally came back though they said he had been dead. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah will come back and he will cut off the hands and legs of those who claim his death." Shortly thereafter it is reported that Abu Bakr arrived and found Umar ibn al-Khattab roused like this so the people turned toward him and he calmly uttered those immortal words,
"And now, he who worships Muhammad. Muhammad is dead now. But he who worships Allah, He is Ever Living and He never dies. Allah says: ‘Muhammad is no more than a Messenger, and indeed Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah, and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful.’" [3:144]
Ibn Al-Musaiyab said that ‘Umar had said: "By Allah, as soon as I heard Abu Bakr say it, I fell down to the ground. I felt as if my legs had been unable to carry me so I collapsed when I heard him say it. Only then did I realize that Muhammad had really died."
And with that there was closure, this was the Messenger of Allah (saws). Osama bin Laden, while undeniably an important part of the defensive jihad we are waging right now in the face of an enemy that rivals the biggest enemies of those that came before us, was a great man from amongst many in the history of this ummah and is one of many that met death at the hands of the enemy but it is in the martyrdom of people like this that the deen of Islam remains eternal, something those not blessed with Islam will never know.
A sign of assassination and martyrdom at the hands of the kuffar is what every true Muslim yearns for and so while they celebrate with alcohol and dancing and in mockery and jest, we reflect on the importance of our own lives, our own experiences, our shortcomings and remember the sacrifices of this great mujahid. How hard he worked for this blessed day and what an honor it would be to contribute even a fraction of what he has contributed with his self and wealth in the way of Allah.
We also realize that many were living jihad through him, deceived into thinking that moral support and empathy in a world that espouses hate day in and out for the heroes is in some way a sanctuary and refuge for a failure to bear the burden of an absent obligation. No longer can we rest in comfort believing that words of encouragement suffice, we must all rise to the occasion and replace the Amir, indeed it may take an effort of the whole. We are strangers and weak, ill-treated in the land, but the small victories we are witnessing are certainly a consequence of the deeds of this man and they will only continue if we take the same path. The slogans of jihad and boasting must be replaced with the similar self-controlled paucity and softness of Osama a softness that was followed with the harshness of action and retribution, absent useless words. Beautiful unto the end.
We deal with death differently; Muslims respond, at least initially, to it like any other human being but we are immediately comforted by the reality that with certainty we will meet our Lord and that life in jihad is something the sincere all crave and desire. How we will miss your rare and eloquent speeches… how a single message would inspire us to do more, to continue fighting the temptations of the dunya, to believe that victory despite the horrendous conditions of the ummah was possible, to sacrifice as best we could in our own way with self and wealth doing something with our lives in the way of Allah. And how the sincere must all be envious now, knowing this is all that you wanted all along, knowing that Allah aza wa jaal has chosen you, that if only they knew that they will laugh now and weep for eternity while it is you who were from amongst the men, “true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and among them is he who awaits. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration." [Surat Al-'Aĥzāb : 23]
In one of the final recorded narrations of the Messenger of Allah (saws), he called his companions and addressed them saying, "Make it a practice to honor and entertain deputations happy with gifts and rewards. Drive the polytheists out of the Arabian Peninsula and dispatch the army of Usamah. Show kindness to the Ansar and forgive their mistakes." He then fell unconscious due to pain and passed away just four days later.
On the third day after Prophet's (saws) death, Abu Bakr announced the departure of Osama's army, as were the commands of Allah's Messenger (saws) a departure that sent a young 17-year old Osama to the frontlines as a leader in a war with the Romans, the Empire of that age, sent him to his own martyrdom in the path of Allah. Similarly a young Osama bin Laden left Saudi Arabia and the material pleasures of this world at a young age to go and wage jihad in the hills of Khurasan in a day and age when the last words this ummah thought they would every hear again were jihad fi sabilillah. He was staunchly resolute and his jihad continued when others ended, jihad was his life as was aforementioned.
In the aftermath of the Manhattan Raids Osama bin Laden stated firmly, “I tell the American people: Allah willing, we will continue to fight you. We will continue the martyrdom operations inside and outside the United States until you end your injustice, abandon your stupidity, and curb your insolent fellows. You should know that we count our killed ones, may Allah have mercy on their souls, particularly those killed in Palestine at the hands of your allies, the Jews. So, we will punish you for them, Allah willing, just as what happened during the New York day. Just remember what I told you at the time about our security and your security.” Similarly it is our duty today to reflect not on what we are doing and to celebrate nostalgically as if being a fan and supporter puts us on the same playing field, no rather we should reflect on what we are not doing realizing that we all must strive to be more and more like Osama bin Laden.
Let us, as a consequence of one man’s martyrdom not delay the new army of Osama. Let us multiply and recognize the true purpose of our lives, reflect on the days that have gone by wasted, dedicate more time, more effort, more wealth in the way of Allah, let the youth of Palestine, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen and everywhere name their next born Osama and teach them of his life so they too may relish death in the way of Allah. Let the example he set forth rescue us from our own spiritual death, take us from our world of discourse and commentary into a realm where knowledge is for implementation.
The kuffar are a people that believe in a polarized world of us and them and in many ways this is why they are a people of conquest, plunder, debauchery and worldly gain. Islam mandates that Muslims unite altogether against them so as to check with balance their pernicious pursuit of worldly gain with the type of self sacrifice that was so representative of this man’s life. Victory for us is in another realm no matter what is attained in the short period of time that with certainty will one day seem like the mere batting of an eye. One man cost them trillions of dollars, lured them into near defeat in Iraq and lingering defeat in Afghanistan, reignited a call to jihad.
The Prophet Muhamamd (saws) never witnessed the spread of Islam form East to West, the vast territories the ummah would come to liberate with Islam. Similarly, Osama did not live long enough to experience the destruction of the American Empire and the victory for Islam that is destined to follow, but the Prophet Muhammad (saws) lived on through Umar ibn al Khattab and Abu Bakr, through Umar ibn Abdul Aziz, Ibn Taymia, Sallahudeen and thousands of others; similarly in Osama bin Laden. In this way Islam and jihad are eternal and continue. In this way we are all Osamah bin Laden, so let us not delay the Army of Osama, may Allah make our lives fortunate enough to end the same way.

#1447Even more details on the OBL photos
Posted by:
CNN White House Senior Supervising Producer Stacia Deshishku
From CNN’s National Political Correspondent Jessica Yellin
A Senior US Official tells CNN 10 hard drives, 5 computers and more than 100 storage devices which includes discs, DVDs and thumb drives were taken from the compound.
The senior us official also says the White House received 3 sets of photos yesterday. The photos included:
1. Photos of OBLs body at a hangar after he was brought back to Afghanistan. This is the most recognizable with a clear picture of his face. The picture is gruesome because he has a massive open head wound across both eyes. It’s very bloody and gory.
2. Photos from the burial at sea on the USS Carl Vinson. Photos of OBL before the shroud was put on and then wrapped in the shroud.
3. There are photos of the raid itself that include photos of the two dead brothers, one of OBLs dead son (adult adolescent, maybe approx 18 yrs old) and some of the inside scene of the compound.
The official says the challenge is that the picture that includes the most recognizable image of OBLs face – from the hangar in Afghanistan – is so gruesome and mangled its not appropriate for say the front page of the newspaper. On the other hand, this is the one that is most identifiable as him.
