    Black Gamblers Lives Matter!

Sorry ma‘am, you didn’t win $43M—there was a slot machine “malfunction”

    David Kravets - 6/15/2017, 6:01 AM
Enlarge / Katrina Bookman takes a selfie showing she hit the big one.

Imagine, if you would, how absolutely giddy you'd be if you won a $43 million jackpot while playing a casino slot machine. You could burn a lot of bridges with that amount of cash.
Then imagine the opposite feeling you'd get when the casino tells you there was a "malfunction" and you're not getting that jackpot, even though the slot machine lit up and said it was "printing cash ticket $42,949,672.76."
That really happened in August 2016 to Katrina Bookman, who is now suing the Resorts World Casino in Queens County Supreme Court, demanding that she get her payout from the Sphinx slot machine.

Instead of a massive payout, the New York casino instead allegedly awarded her a steak dinner and the $2.25 balance she had on the machine when she thought she hit the big one on the one-armed bandit made by International Game Technology, which is also named in the suit. The unhappy gambler alleges negligence, breach of contract, and negligent misrepresentation, according to Courthouse News Service, which says the complaint included a selfie Bookman took with the machine that showed she had hit the big one. This isn't the first time a slot machine has malfunctioned, resulting in a gambler being denied serious cash. An 87-year-old Illinois woman gambling in Iowa had hit a nearly $42 million payout from the Hello Kitty slot machine. But she was denied payment because of a computer glitch.
Iowa's top court ruled in 2015 the slot machine's user-agreement, available on the touchscreen, said the maximum payout was $10,000.

"Any message appearing on the screen indicating the patron would receive a $41 million bonus was a gratuitous promise and the casino's failure to pay it could not be challenged as a breach of contract," the Iowa Supreme Court ruled.

After news broke of Bookman's plight, the casino said in a statement that "Machine malfunctions are rare, and we would like to extend our apologies to Ms. Bookman for any inconvenience this may have caused." The New York State Gaming Commission has sided with the Resorts World Casino, ruling the there was "clearly a display malfunction" and that the machine's maximum payout was programmed for $6,500. The slot machine was fixed and operating the following day.

If the casino says the machine was faulty/glitched, they should return all the money they made from that machine to everyone who lost it to the machine. it could be glitch that potential winners didn't win.

That is fukked up. What ever happened to being responsible for your mistakes? That 87 year old woman probably had a heart attack when she thought she'd won. If I'm either of them, I would have fainted, fell down a bunch of stairs and broke my arms and legs. Bet they'd be on the hook for several million then.

Fukkin casino's are foul as fuk.

Looks like just a display error

They don't print tickets for high amounts, they come over and verify and hand pay or check pay if it's really high

I'm pretty sure from what I've read the reels never even lined up for a big win, the numbers displayed in the payout were just messed up

Obviously just a gibs me dat attempt, and she should have her food stamps garnished to pay for the casino employee time taken to respond to this bullcrap

Years ago, I was eating at Appleby's with 3 friends. I look at my friends plate and it had a big plastic bag in it. Appleby's obviously just heats up their meals but someone forgot to remove the bag. I said, "dude look at your plate" and started laughing along with the other friends. He was like "WTH" but was ready to let it go. We all said, hell no, we have to report it. So he calls over the manager and had the plate covered up. He then said, "hey is it standard policy for customers to eat plastic pieces in their food". The manager was apologetic, saying he was sorry, that it was an honest mistake but wasn't saying anything to make good on it. He should have at least comped his meal. Okay, this guy is a hard ass. I called one of my lawyer friends and another who was a photographer. They come up there and we started taking pictures of the table, the plate, down my friends throat, etc. The entire restaurant guest started asking questions. That manager was turning ghost white. He comes over, we introduce our lawyer, he was like "oh no", we don't need all that, look you all come back whenever you want bring as many people as you like and the entire meal will be on me, tip included. He writes up a letter and we leave.

About 2 months later, we invite ~11 people back to that Appleby's and we buy up all kind of shit. I think I had 3 dinners, we had wine, appetizers, deserts, galore. The waiters really thought they had a huge tip coming that night. We pull out the paper and the manager on duty was like, "we can't honor this". (The bill was like $1,400). We told him to call the other guy. He come's back to the table and tells us, "have a good evening, Do you want to take home anything?"

To this day, I still don't know how we rang up that much of a bill. Do you know how hard it is to ring up a $1,400 bill at Appleby's (without getting expensive wines that they don't have). That's incredible in itself.

Don't have me win on a slot machine and tell me it was a mistake.

I feel bad for her if the reels lined up and then was told it was a malfunction. Seriously doubt that's what happened here

If she hit the cashout button with $2.25 and then the screen showed cashing out 42 million, I don't feel a bit sorry for her, I feel sorry for the employees who had to listen to her bs

Yeah, this is a key point that modern day reporters seem to always leave out. If the reels line up she should be going ape shit over this. If she was cashing out $2.25, someone needs to kick her in her butt.

Just more fake news. From the leader in fake news, CNN

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/01/us/slo...rnd/index.html

Watch the video at the top of the article. Pay attention to the quoted text at the end from the casino.

First, the max win possible on the machine is $6500, so right there you know there is a malfunction. Second, she printed out the ticket which had her actual balance on it of $2.25, which indicates it was just a glitch in the $ amount shown on the screen.

Disgusting the way she is acting and tearing up about it, and disgusting the way CNN is painting her as a poor victim who had a rough life and now a big bad corporation is screwing her again.

"The struggle I've been through, it's hard to cope," said Bookman.

She already earmarked the millions, to buy a barber shop for her son and the a big chunk she would give back to her community. The apparent jackpot hit was in late August at Resorts World Casino.

It was casino chaos in video shot by Katrina's partner after she reported her huge winnings (watch in the video player above). She was surrounded by customers and casino personnel and security. Escorted off the casino floor, she was told to come back the next day for the decision.

Katrina remembers her next day visit to the casino, "I said what did I win? (casino rep said) You didn't win nothing." Katrina says the only winning the casino offered was a steak dinner.

I hear ya Willy. Do you think that should've offered her a little more, than just a piece of meat, for ruining her "casino experience and good time"? I mean, it's not like they'd go broke, if say they give her 1-2K worth of freeplays or smthng to make her feel better.

Yeah, that was kinda shitty to have the waiters work and not leave them a tip. But the manager said he would pay, tip included, even though I doubt he gave them anything. We sure weren't about to shuck out a few hundred dollars.

You can easily run up a huge bill at a top restaurant, especially with a few bottles but I still can't wrap my head around us doing that at Appleby's. I wish I had made a copy of the bill.

It did remind me of hearing that Vince Young was spending $5,000 a week at Cheesecake factory. How the hell do you do that??? Even with a huge entourage, that is pretty hard to do.

I just don't think she ever believed she won 43 million dollars. Seems like she knew what she was cashing out, she knew what it said on the printed ticket, and she knew the 43 million on the screen was an error but decided to make a stink about it. I just don't think you should reward people like that with anything.

Dlow - Who cares... It's a mistake on the casino's part. They are responsible. What kind of fukking machine say's you just won millions? They fukked up big time. That's like you or I opening our front door and publisher's clearance house comes out with balloons saying that you just won $10 million dollars. You're excited as hell, take pictures, call your friends and family and they tell you to come back tomorrow??? What? Then they tell you, they knocked on your house in error because of a malfunction. Here's a steak for your troubles. That's bullshit. Aren't businesses supposed to be responsible for their errors?

I don't know the entire circumstance because the news is so fukking awful, you can't get any details. Like if the reel said she won the jackpot then the error was with the screen. But if the screen said she won in error, that's there fault. That 87 year old woman probably lost a few years of her life when she saw that.

If I'm your lawyer, I'm going to tell you to do the same damn thing. Start crying over how they just shattered your dreams. I would have you attend counseling and a suicide prevention group. I would have you show death threats you got from people that thought you were a whiner and show how you lost your job because people were jealous. This casino has to pay.

It isn't really like publisher's clearing house though because the reels never lined up and there were no bells, lights flashing, etc. It was just an obvious display error.
I agree the casino owes something if the malfunction made it seem like she won big. If that's the case I retract what I have said and she deserves compensation for the mental anguish of thinking you were set like a queen for life then finding out you aren't.

All I have read about this situation it doesn't point to that though. The biggest mistake that casino made was making her wait a day. How long does it take to run the video back and see the 43 million number doesn't match her amount when she hit the cash out button?

So as I'm writing this, I think maybe they should offer her something more like rocket said ($500-1000 freeplay) for making her wait a day giving her time to think she possibly has a chance of collecting 43 mill. That was really dumb. There is no way though that you watch your balance while playing and at $2.25 you hit cashout, then think you've won 43 million dollars because that's what the number says on the screen, even though your ticket says exactly what you cashed out for.

Edit:In another article it says Casino personnel told her she didn't win anything as they were escorting her off the floor, not the next day, so the only thing she deserves is to be barred from that casino IMO. They were most likely escorting her off the floor because of the spectacle it had become.
