#3I watched it on reruns when I was a little kid. I don't think the show ever explained how Salami got his nickname.

#4Ha-ha. I'll try to find that answer. I actually DON'T think it was a nickname.Originally posted by IanI watched it on reruns when I was a little kid. I don't think the show ever explained how Salami got his nickname.
The show did try to tackle issues like racism. The roster was a mix of brothers plus other ethnicities:
*Mexican: Gomez
*Jewish Caucasian: Goldstein
*Italian Caucasian: Salami (I think that was his real last name)Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#5I stand corrected, Ian. You are correct:
Timothy Van Patten as Mario "Salami" Pettrino.
...I'll try to find a derivation of the SALAMI nickname.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#9No, he was Kirk Cameron's friend in the sitcom "Growing Pains" I believe he died like 20-30 years ago as I vaguely remember hearing about it back in the day.Originally posted by ChuckyTheGoat

As far as the question you asked, I have heard of White Shadow but do not think I've ever seen an episode.👍 1Comment -

#10White Shadow was a great show, really stood out. And Ken Howard was exceptional, maybe best portrayal of a coach ever on TV or film. It was that good.
YouTube: 'white shadow' season 1, episodes 1-4 right there at top result. Go ahead and watch - but only after you've been to the gym. Couch potatoes do not deserve this show.Comment -

#11Nice, Shea. Yes, it was my favorite show. I found most sitcoms to be un-watchable. In my video above (post #1):Originally posted by ByeSheaWhite Shadow was a great show, really stood out. And Ken Howard was exceptional, maybe best portrayal of a coach ever on TV or film. It was that good.

*Van Patten (Salami) talks about the show taking on different social issues. This wasn't standard for shows of that time.
*Howard (Coach Reaves) talks about being well-received by coaches like Jim Calhoun and Coach K (from Duke). Howard's portrayal is really good. He's stern with his players, just like many coaches from that time. But he also helps his players and sometimes jokes with them.

It was a quality show, so was Craig T. Nelson's 'Coach'

1) In the first show. "Yeah. Like a white shadow."
2) Kenny Reaves is so good! He's tackling real life issues. He tries to help his players.
...Observe an inner-city HS team. A lot of the issues this show addresses.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#19Ken Howard grew up in my neck of the woods, on the other side of the Long Island Sound. (Manhassett, Long Island).
Howard was a standout player at Manhasset HS. He was dubbed 'The White Shadow by his teammates because he was the only white kid on the teamComment -

#20Been re-watching the episodes. Very good:
*Thomas Carter (Hayward) is probably the oldest actor on the team. He was age 25 in season one. Howard (Reeves) was age 34. So, the gap was really only 9 years.
...Similar age discrepancy on GOOD TIMES. John Amos was only age 34. Jimmy Walker was playing his son, but Walker was 26 years old. Jimmy was playing a character much younger. In fairness, Jimmy was hilarious and the age-diff wasn't a problem.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#21Strange but true story about the cast:
*Jason Bernard played Principal Jim Willis in 1st episode.
...Ed Bernard played Principal Jim Willis from episode 2+.
...Strange part (for me) = same last name but NOT brothers.
...Looked similar enough to not be a distraction. Go figure.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -
