Padres owner Peter Seidler dead at 63
Shocking development, he had a mystery procedure a couple of months ago and he died this morning. The cause of death is being kept under wraps for now. RIP

I had the very same thought.
He comes from baseball royalty, his grandfather was Walter O'Malley, just a solid baseball dude.

Didn't he have a couple of recent cancer bouts?
      RIP.

This is a punch to the gut for Padre fans.

Seidler put his money where his mouth was and wanted to build a winner here. He was also a really lovely guy by all accounts. Condolences to his family and close friends.

This also begs the question, what happens now with the franchise? payroll? I read that he wanted ownership to stay in the family and hopefully that's the case but who knows what will shake out now.

There were some ups and downs but he instilled hope into the fanbase...prior to his arrival there was little to none of it for a couple of decades

You're absolutely right. you could feel the energy with the fans the past few years. People are a lot more passionate , they're more knowledgeable about the team, players, stats, potential trades, etc. Seidler changed baseball for San Diego.

The old man Alex Spanos was a good guy and owner...when he died and Dean took over, it all went to the crapper.

Alex never would have moved the team.

A semi fire sale seems more likely...I've heard every player other than machado in trade rumors the past few weeks.

If they trade Tatis or Kim, the fanbase will be irate. I could live with anyone else going.

Yes nasher, I have yet to hear anyone say anything bad about Seidler the person. This goes for employees, fans, players, the baseball community etc

He was generous with his money and did a lot around the community, with the homeless etc
