#57As a casual observer of this game and no action on it, I really am in shock a 2 time SB winning coach wouldn't punt it on 4th and 20 and then when it went to 25 {at your own 30 yl} I almost shit my pants seeing him go for it. 3 timeouts and 2 minutes left. If you are down 2 scores different story. I can honestly say I have NEVER seen that in my life. I am somewhat surprised this wasn't mentioned by Collinsworth or anyone else for that matter than me and you.Originally posted by d2betswtf now KC stupid. 3 timeouts why the heck.Comment -

you sound as surprised/confused/etc as fans and media were when 14 years ago Bill Belichick saw a 17 pt 4th quarter lead dwindle to 6 vs the Colts in Indy and when the Pats faced 4th and 2 on their own 28 he decided to go for it to clinch the win instead of punt and probably force Peyton to go at least 80 maybe more to win with no timeouts. it didn't work and colts won 35-34 after trailing 14-31 in early 4th
but Bill didn't go for it in 2009 on his own 28 up 6 on 4th and 2 because of analytics... he went for it because he was scared of Manning shredding his defense
lions went for it on that 4th and 2 when they had momentum, they were only up 1 because of the gifted def TD and drop leading to one of KC field goals
should've pinned KC back deep but they didn't and got lucky with more drops and a KC penaltyComment -

#60Actually I read quite an interesting take on Twitter, Suggested to run backwards and go out of bounds at the 9 yard line. Absent a stupid penalty, they'd get the ball back with about 1:45 either down 4 or 8 (or 7 or 9 if Det scored TD and went for 2). Of course that involves not trying to convert the 4th and 25. Still, might have been the best move.Originally posted by ThaTopMoronyou sound surprised... game keeps changing

#63The more I think of it the more I think this was the right move. What were the odds of converting on 4th down? 10% tops, maybe less? If they convert, 70% chance to win. So that's 7. Det probably had a 65% of winning with a first down. And then the other 35% chance generally they get a FG. Let's assign a 20% chance for TD after. So that's another 7. 14% total.Originally posted by d2betsActually I read quite an interesting take on Twitter, Suggested to run backwards and go out of bounds at the 9 yard line. If they run out at the 9, let's say they have a 65% chance TD or 35% FG. The FG is the same as other scenario.
So the question is whether KC had a better chance of converting 4th and 25 and scoring or a better chance of scoring 8 with 1:40 and then winning in OT. That's got to be better than a 7% chance. I'd give them 30% chance TD and then 60% converting. So that's 18 and then favored in OT. About 10. 10> 7.
Running back out the at 9 was the way to go.
Yes, there are some other minor variables I ignored.Comment -

#64Considering Patrick Mahomes converted 4th and 15 with his legs the last time these two teams played 4th and 25 didn't seem so unreasonable, even if it meant drawing a PI.Comment -

The more I think of it, the more I see that punting was probably wrong. Because a 1st down ends it anyway.
I still think the unique go out at the 9 scenario was the highest probability.Comment -
