#11Yes, it’s tough. Lots of “my son is going to be next Bryce Harper” or my favorite: last season this dad had his son batting both left and right every game. The guy even told me “that’s the fastest way to the majors!”Originally posted by stevenashThe parents are the reason I gave up coaching baseball.

Finally, I said to the little dude- let’s just focus on batting right handed right now. His dad came over to me with his chest popped out and said “you guys are messing up our plan”

1. Have Fun
2. Work Hard
3. Encourage each other
What sucks is when the kid probably wants to play another sport or do something different but the old man is living out his glory days.Comment -

#13High School is the great equalizer these days. If you aren't good, they cut you. My son who played baseball since he was four never wanted to put the work in. I built a batting cage, had all the gear, and he wanted to play video games. Then he goes to HS and gets cut freshman year. Now plays football and rugby and puts in a shit ton of work and guess what, he's starting in both sports. Weird. Anyone want to buy a Jugs machine???Comment -

I couldn't hit one for shit.
My HS coach gave me a little lip once for striking out looking on a nasty ass hook.
He said to me "You're one of my best hitter, that's the best you can do"?
I said "here, take this bat, get in there, see if you can hit this kid"?
Good thing coach had a sense of humor.Comment -

#18I'm truly surprised Fitzgerald allowed this in his program. The dude was anal about EVERYTHING from what I've heard. Ran a tight ship. Didn't he just sign a contract extension a year or so ago? Also a new state of the art weight lifting room/facility? Dude had it made over there. Bonehead mistake.Comment -

#19I read earlier Fitzgerald is claiming ignorance, he didn't know, and has hired a high power mouth piece that specializes in employment and contract law.Originally posted by TheMoneyShotI'm truly surprised Fitzgerald allowed this in his program. Northwestern and their attorneys said to Fitz and his attorneys "Good luck with all that, he signed a 'for cause' and we fired Fitz for cause.
I have no skin in this game, but if that's true and Fitzgerald did sign a 'for cause' contract, then he's screwed, he has no case.
I'm not a lawyer though.
I remember my dad telling me when I was ten years old "ignorance is not an excuse".
My dad was right all along, ignorance is never an excuse, it's Fitz's job to know what's going on and if he didn't he deserves to get shit canned.Comment -

#20Haven't really watched any sports news etc. Log into SBR... and looked at this thread... and I was shocked. Just go to SBR to get your news. lol I never said Fitzgerald was a great coach either... just for the record. I just noticed he was always "working" for a better contract... and he GOT IT!! What does he do with it?? Throws it down the toilet. Totally odd to me... but that's life. To say "you didn't know that was going on in your program" just ignorance. A head coach... especially a major collegiate coach... always knows whats going on with his team.Originally posted by stevenashI read earlier Fitzgerald is claiming ignorance, he didn't know, and has hired a high power mouth piece that specializes in employment and contract law.

As far as the contract is concerned... if Fitzgerald gets 15-20 million out of it... I would consider it a win for him. If I was an attorney... I would be shooting for that amount.
There's always "MORE" to the story... and hopefully we'll hear about it... soon enough.Comment -

#21I think Northwestern is glad he’s gone. This just pushed the expiration date forward. At the end of the day he only won 52% of his games. I know… I know… Northwestern historically for shit. Doesn’t matter. These distractions go away when you are winning.Comment -

#24I agree with this.... but what was with the long term deal? Who ok'ed the deal? Especially with a .500 winning percentage? I truly thought it was a joke of a deal 2 years back. #26No clue on the deal but you are right. I think administrators are as bad as sports team owners who just throw money around… the unknown is usually scarier than the known. #27Speaking of throwing money around, it must be nice to be Bobby Bonilla! He get's paid a cool $1.19 million every July 1st (since 2011) until the year 2035!...He will be 72 years old when the deal expires! That was the ridiculous contract the Mets signed him to and Bonilla (who was mediocre at best) is laughing all the way to the bank!Originally posted by mjsuax13No clue on the deal but you are right. #28A tremendous deal. Especially the length of it. Nationals paying Scherzer $15 million a year through 2028. I know these teams sign these crazy deals to manipulate cap savings, etc… is it worth it?Originally posted by Da Manster!Speaking of throwing money around, it must be nice to be Bobby Bonilla! #29Well in MLB, they have a "luxury" tax which an owner pays if he goes over the salary cap. this revenue and "extra" money of course is shared with and split among all of the other owners! Scherzer deal is absolutely insane...Must be good work if you can get it. the high cost of buying a championship...what always gets me is why teams disband and get rid of good players after winning the world series when they originally spent all of that money in the first place to acquire those very same players and win it all?!...kind of like oxymoronic, bipolar behavior!Originally posted by mjsuax13A tremendous deal.
